Not rebroadcast for over 50 years, this special was shown on Turner Classic Movies as part of their 100th Birthday Tribute to Doris Day on April 3, 2022.
This was one of two one-hour musical specials that were part of CBS' multi-million-dollar contract with Doris Day's production company, a contract that Day insisted up until her death was negotiated by her husband and manager Martin Melcher without her knowledge. When Melcher died suddenly in April 1968, Day chose to go ahead and honor the contract, appearing in this special and Doris Day Today (1975), as well as starring in The Doris Day Show (1968) from 1968-1973.
At the time he appeared in this, Perry Como was still under his $25-million exclusive contract with NBC, which specifically barred him from appearing on other networks. But Como and Doris Day were fans of each other and somehow worked out a deal between NBC and CBS, allowing both of them to appear together and sing together.
This special was originally aired while Doris Day's eponymous sitcom was halfway through its successful five-year run on CBS. The sitcom was among the 20 highest-rated series on television.
Taped in 1970, not shown until 1971.
