Taking liberties with Lovecraft
jcmcmd9322 October 2012
The play was brilliant! Mick D'arcy's lyrics and Edmund Pantuliano's innovative score joined with an especially talented cast and crew at the Vortex Theatre to create a stunning visual spectacle. Mariam Hembrook and Sandy Blue play the dual role of Erica Zann -- the mute violinist and her inner voice, personified. Although some viewers were a little confused by this twist, it worked well and added to the eeriness of the story. E. Dale Smith has a tendency to go a little over the top but overall his role as William was very good and his voice is excellent. Scott Swanson was so creepy and wonderful as the landlord; his every scene was simply delightful. The musicians were outstanding -- Mariam's violin, hauntingly beautiful, draws us into the tale. Alas, the film leaves a lot to be desired and doesn't begin to capture the experience of the live performance. Shot live with only 2 cameras, Hechler did some bizarre cutting that only serves to make you dizzy. Turn off the picture and just listen to the music and you'll enjoy it far more! The CD of the original score is still available at the Vortex website.
