This is the story of two couples whose marriage in on the rocks.....
Although directed by a man of the theater ,the actors seem to be left to their own devices,waiting for something to happen concerning their character;they are like puppets the director uses now and then in a desultory way ;some scenes come at the most awkward moment : Nicole Garcia's kleptomania for instance ,but there are plenty of them ,the would be moving scenes in the cemetery are not the least incongruous.People like Luis Bunuel knew how to place side by side weird sequences and he had a good sense of humor at that,which is definitely lacking in this so-called "deep" "meaningful" hodgepodge, specially made for highbrows reading TV magazines dedicated to an "educated" elite .
The child is reduced to a prop ,no matter if he was almost crushed under a piece of wood,or could have been shot by a stray bullet ;there's also the obligatory bourgeois side :the restaurant -in which I would never have a meal ,never in a month of Sundays - is so famous Chinese (??) are interested in it ,the father-in-law is a tormented artist ,and the mother-in-law ,when she does not act the occasional shoplifter - and not to give to the poor- talks with her - absolutely unbearable- best friend about twenty-five -year-old men who are better at love than the old hubbies.What a drag it is getting old!
