Robert Pattinson, one of the most talented English actors, embarked on his acting journey when he was 15. After playing supporting roles in the German made-for-television film Ring of the Nibelungs in 2004 and Mira Nair’s costume drama Vanity Fair, he landed the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005.
The role of Cedric Diggory helped Robert Pattinson earn recognition in the industry. Then came his portrayal of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, based on Stephenie Meyer’s eponymous novel series. Although this role gained him worldwide recognition, the actor is not very fond of it. In 2022, he finally got the chance to portray the DC Comics superhero Batman and might be reprising his role sooner than fans had expected.

4K discs are selling like hotcakes so it’s only natural for studios to give Home Theater fanatics the biggest vintage blockbusters. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s hyper-efficient, no-loitering juggernaut is a return to the joys of serial action thrills, one ‘did you see that?’ bravura sequence after another. Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones is pitted against Paul Freeman’s villainous Belloq, and the might of Jehovah combats the Nazis. Accept the proposition that Adolf Hitler was ‘nuts about the occult’ and everything else will make logical sense. The picture hasn’t dated at all — it overflows with Gee-Whiz excitement that makes Marvel exploits play like weak tea.

Fritz Lang’s first American picture is a searing social statement out of message-averse Hollywood. It’s also a cinematic landmark, packed with innovative visual concepts. Sylvia Sidney and Spencer Tracy have great appeal as lovers torn apart by vigilante violence, and Tracy’s very Langian hero pulls off a ‘return from the dead’ to serve as an avenging angel. It’s one of the talkies’ earliest direct attacks on America’s plague of lynching, a liberal assault that even the Production Code couldn’t stop — the show took the ‘social issue drama’ to new heights, even as Fritz Lang didn’t find favor with the Hollywood studio system. Also starring Walter Abel, Bruce Cabot and Walter Brennan. CineSavant presents the evidence of MGM tampering at the conclusion, that changes the film’s message and meaning.

The Kiss Before the Mirror
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1933 / 1.33:1 / 69 min.
Starring Nancy Carroll, Frank Morgan, Gloria Stuart
Cinematography by Karl Freund
Directed by James Whale
James Whale’s The Kiss Before the Mirror opens on familiar terrain for the director of Frankenstein—a moon-lit backroad littered with crooked trees and clutching branches. A figure tip-toes out of the darkness toward her destination—not a mad scientist’s castle but a swanky post-modern bungalow where her lover waits. The woman catches the moonlight quite well, thank you—she’s played by an incandescent Gloria Stuart and she has just escaped her husband for a rendezvous with a self-impressed roué played by the blankly handsome Walter Pidgeon. The two engage in pre-sex small talk that is so coy, so ear-grating, that it’s clear Whale is preparing them (and the audience) for some awful comeuppance.

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Robert Pattinson is hoping the final "Twilight" movie isn't released in 3-D - because he finds the technology "confusing". The British hunk, who plays bloodsucker Edward Cullen, is preparing to start work on the final installment of the vampire franchise, "The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn".
And he's hoping film bosses decide against releasing the movie in 3-D, as he fears watching it back would give him a headache. He tells MTV News, "The 3-D thing confuses me. I haven't seen 'Avatar' or any of these 3-D movie things yet. The idea of it... I remember 3-D movies from when I was a kid, and I can just picture it giving me a headache."

Robert Pattinson made his Late Show with David Letterman debut last night, and his choice of anecdotes will no doubt encourage Twihards to Twiharder. Though he couldn't explain why he elicits such a strong response from fans wherever he goes — "I don't know, maybe it's like a kind of scent or something" — he shared a story that shows devotion can have its rewards. Back in 2007, when he was in Spain filming his role as Salvador Dali in Little Ashes, there was a girl who waited outside his apartment every day for about three weeks. "I was so chronically bored that just one day.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Sat.1's cold war epic The Airlift lost altitude in its second outing Monday night, but the two-part miniseries, depicting the heroic 1948 U.S.-led airlift into a Soviet-blockaded Berlin, still topped German ratings. 7.8 million viewers tuned in for the finale Monday night, delivering a 23% market share. That was good enough to beat RTL's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? which took second place for the night with a 20.8% audience share and a total viewership of 7.4 million. Airlift's Monday performance was down from the 9.9 million viewers and 24% audience share the event's first half scored Sunday and short of the ratings achieved by recent Sat.1 miniseries A Light In Dark Places and The Ring of the Niebelungen.
