Sex & Nudity

  • A man flirts with his girlfriend's teenage daughter and talks about how bad he feels that there's nobody around to touch her. He then comes up behind her and touches her butt.
  • Anne Heche's character has multiple boyfriends, and it is implied that she has sex with them. All five of her children, ranging from ages 7 to 16, have different fathers. She also dresses provocatively, exposing her breasts and midriff.
  • A teenage girl gets pregnant and takes off with her boyfriend.
  • It is mentioned that a 7-year-old boy walked in on his mother "doing exercises" with her boyfriend in her bedroom.
  • Teenage characters flirt with each other, kiss, and touch each other. There is some offscreen sex.

Violence & Gore

  • A teenage girl smashes her mother's boyfriend in the head with a beer can after he comes onto her and touches her rear. There is blood on his forehead. He angrily calls her a bitch and slaps her hard. There is blood on her mouth, teeth, and cheek.

Profanity

  • There is some language, including "bitch", "hell", "damn", and "retard".
  • A teenage girl uses the word "bastard" to describe herself and her four siblings, all of whom are the product of a different father they never met.
  • A mother tells her teenage daughter that she is going to hell, to which the daughter responds, "I was born in hell!"
  • The term "knocked up" is used to describe a teenage girl when she gets pregnant.
  • There are physical fights between various characters. There is punching, slapping, wrestling to the ground, and sometimes even grabbing by the neck (although nobody is ever seriously injured).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Anne Heche's character is a drug addict. She also smokes and drinks, and she is in and out of jail throughout the movie.
  • A pregnant teenager attempts to smoke a cigarette before her older sister stops her.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are a few police raids involving a mother and her five children. There is a lot of screaming, body restraining, and crying. A teenage girl runs alongside a car that her younger brother was put into, and she is visibly upset.
  • Two teenage girls are put in juvenile hall after their mother is arrested. They are verbally taunted by the other girls there, and it erupts into a fist fight.
  • A mother pushes her sons out of the way as she leaves the house. This can be disturbing to watch, even though it is brief.
  • Anne Heche's character behaves erratically as a result of her drinking and drug use. She sometimes yells and screams at her children.
  • In a scene where a teenage girl and her 7-year-old brother are out buying milk, they are just about to get in their car when there is a drive-by shooting. We see guns being fired many times. The girl and her brother get down under their car until it is over. They are not hurt, but their car windows are smashed, and there is glass everywhere.
  • A 17-year-old girl decides to seek emancipation from her mother and attempt to get legal guardianship of her three younger brothers. The mother gets very upset when she finds out. She screams, pushes her daughter, calls her a bitch, and even grabs her around the neck and wrestles her to the ground. The daughter tells her she'll call the cops if she doesn't get out, so the mother leaves.The grandmother and younger brothers are all watching this unfold, and the grandmother is crying hysterically. (Nobody is injured.)

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Gracie is granted emancipation and guardianship of her brothers at the end of the movie. Their mother is very upset and threatens to find them, no matter where they go. Then she leaves the room.
