It’s not a “Treehouse of Horror” episode, but things still get pretty ghastly in the opening sequence of this week’s The Simpsons.

On one of the worst weekends in years, Guardians of the Galaxy easily held on to first place for the third-straight frame. Meanwhile, The Identical*the week's only new nationwide release*bombed with less than $2 million. The Top 12 earned $51.5 million, which makes it the lowest-grossing weekend in six years. In the past decade, the worst weekend was September 5-7, 2008, when the Top 12 grossed $50.3 million.Guardians of the Galaxy eased 39 percent to $10.4 million. This is the movie's fourth weekend in first place; the only other movies to accomplish such a feat in the past decade are The Dark Knight, Avatar and The Hunger Games. On Saturday, Guardians passed last Summer's Man of Steel, which is noteworthy given the discrepancy in pre-existing fanbases for these two superhero movies. With $294.8 million, Guardians is now the highest-grossing movie ever from the month of August (ahead of The Sixth Sense), and it's on track to...

On what will likely be the quietest weekend of the year, sci-fi sequel Riddick easily took first place with $19.03 million. The Top 12 earned an estimated $66.1 million, which is the lowest figure yet in 2013. Still, that's up 27 percent from last year, which makes this a decent start to the month of September.Opening at 3,107 theaters, Riddick's $19.03 million debut is right in line with modest expectations. Adjusting for ticket price inflation, Riddick had slightly higher initial attendance than Pitch Black, but was way below 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick (which cost around three times as much). Otherwise, star Vin Diesel doesn't have a ton of movies to compare to, though it is worth noting that this opening is well above 2008's Babylon A.D. ($9.5 million). With school and the NFL season getting underway, many people tend to stay away from movie theaters around this time of year. As a result, it has...

Similar to the domestic box office, international business was fairly slow this past weekend. The Expendables 2 wound up in first place thanks to a very strong $25 million seven-day opening in China. Based on the figures that are currently available, the movie has already earned over $158 million overseas, and is on pace to easily pass the original movie's estimated $171 million foreign total within the next week. The Bourne Legacy added $12.9 million from 47 markets this weekend for a new foreign total of $78 million. It debuted in first place in South Korea with an excellent $4 million, but was a bit underwhelming in Brazil with $1.1 million (though both are new highs for the Bourne franchise). The movie is set to expand in to 16 territories, including Germany, next weekend. Thanks to a $12.9 million haul, The Dark Knight Rises pushed its overseas total past $600 million this weekend. Worldwide, the movie was at $1.041 billion through Sunday,...

The Cold Light of Day! Brought to you by the Madrid Film Tax Credit Production Office and the Society for the Promotion of Henry Cavill as the Next Big Thing! What’s that? You’ve never heard of Henry Cavill? You will: he’s playing Superman in Zack Snyder’s reboot next year. And you can bet your sweet bippy that the Society was uber excited by the prospect of injecting some Cavill directly into your fanboy lobe early with a kickass action movie. And you can bet your sweet bippy that the Society was aghast to discover that the would-be kickass action movie -- that would be this one -- is as generic as corn flakes (the store brand, not even the Kellogg’s). I think it’s fair to imagine that this flick was dumped unceremoniously into European theaters this past spring, where it sank without a trace,...

We’ve already made it clear that, for Mabrouk El Mechri The Cold Light of Day won’t be a worthy follow-up to 2008′s acclaimed Jcvd. A bit of a shame, but something has just entered his field of vision — something that could wash the (potentially) bad taste of that actioner away. Variety informs us he’s currently developing Dalida, a biopic of the (soon-t0-be) titular Egypt-born, Italy-rooted, France-raised singer and actress, which Quad Films — the group behind recent French hits The Intouchables and Heartbreaker — will be producing.
Nadia Farés has been commissioned to play Dalida — born Iolanda Giglotti, though her first name was later changed to Yolanda — who reached her peak fame during the ’60s, performing songs such as “Parole parole” (with the legendary Alain Delon) and “Salma ya Salama,” while also making onscreen appearances in foreign art films. Unfortunately, the performer committed suicide in 1987 at the age of 54; as a result,...

'The Cold Light Of Day' Trailer: Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver and Henry Cavill Threaten Each Other
Sometimes, it's nice to have a do-over. In "The Cold Light Of Day," Will Shaw (Henry Cavill, a.k.a. Superman) finds out his father (Bruce Willis) has been a CIA agent his entire life. After their family is kidnapped, Shaw is forced to step into his dad's place to save them, and himself, while worrying about a fellow government agent who may be setting them up (Sigourney Weaver). If this movie sounds sorta-kinda familiar, it's because it is: In 2011, Weaver was in "Abduction," the starring vehicle for teen werewolf sensation Taylor Lautner (in the film, his character finds out he is the son of a CIA agent). That movie went on to gross a paltry $28 million, domestically -- not exactly the blockbuster Lionsgate envisioned. It also got skewered by critics. (Four percent on Rotten Tomatoes!) But, hey, everyone deserves a re-do, especially if you played one of the most...
