Two and a half hours of American Idol on the schedule kept Fox Broadcasting Co. on top in the adults 18-49 demographic for the week ended March 14. But while Idol stayed hot, it was slow going last week for Fox's midseason premieres, including comedy Cracking Up, Friday reality entry Playing It Straight and drama Wonderfalls. Fox offered up a double-dose of Cracking Up in the post-Idol 9:30 p.m. berth on Tuesday (which featured a special 90-minute edition of Idol) and Wednesday, but the kooky-family comedy had a hard time hanging on to Idol's coattails. Playing it Straight and Wonderfalls did only modest business for Fox on Friday, though both shows did won their time slots in the teen and adults 18-34 demos. For the week, Fox averaged 4.1 rating/12 share in the adults 18-49 demo. NBC, which was handicapped by a high volume of reruns, was a close second for the week at 3.9/11, followed by CBS (3.6/10) and ABC (2.7/7). In total viewers, CBS was No. 1 as usual with an average of 12 million, followed by NBC (10.2 million), Fox (9.5 million), ABC (7.7 million), UPN (3.3 million) and the WB (3.2 million).
