Rotterdam this year has offered one certifiable giant discovery in international cinema: German filmmaker Dominik Graf, revealed in a simultaneously introductory and interventionist retrospective programmed by Christoph Huber and Olaf Möller. An incredibly prolific filmmaker beginning in the late 1970s, Graf has interwoven his cinema into the fabric of the German television industry, producing a body of work ranging from television episodes, made-for-tv films, essay movies, documentaries, and a handful of films intended for the cinema.
Yet despite Graf's prodigious output of nearly sixty works, its primarily creation for national television has meant that it has been essentially unavailable to English-speaking audiences prior to Rotterdam's 17 film retrospective. The first film of his I saw was Komm mir nicht nach (Don't Follow Me Around) in the middle of the Dreileben trilogy in 2010, notably another for-television project, but one which had festival and theatrical ambitions beyond German living rooms, perhaps due...

Russell Crowe had what sounds like a slight scare this past weekend when the ‘Braveheart’ actor needed help from the Coast Guard after veering off course during a kayak trip with an unknown friend. The forty-eight year old departed from Cold Spring Harbor on the trip this past Saturday, Sept. 1st, that kept the ‘Bounty Hunter’ performer in the water for more than 4hrs searching for a way to get back home. Around 10pm Crowe and his friend reportedly called out to the Coast Guard in the Huntington Bay area for help after ditching their kayak’s on shore, 10 miles east from where they first started out per Ace Showbiz. "Master and Commander" star Russell Crowe isn't so good at sea after all.
The Oscar-winning thesp managed to lose his way kayaking in the wild waters off New York's Long Island over the holiday weekend and had to be picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat. Oops.
He had launched from Cold Spring Harbor with a (non-famous) friend on Saturday afternoon for a leisurely trip through the Long Island Sound. Apparently, however, the friend was no better a seaman than Crowe, as the two got pretty lost quickly after the sun went down, and ended up beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay—nearly 10 miles east of where they set out, Huffington Post reports.
Fortunately, the Coast Guard was patrolling the area around 10 p.m. and heard Crowe calling for help, Petty Office Robert Swieciki recounts. Crowe, his buddy and their kayaks were all safely pulled onto the boat...

The photograph you see above is of Russell Crowe posing with Coast Guard members after they ended up rescuing him after the actor got lost on his kayak! The actor and a friend of his were kayaking around Long Island, New York, over the weekend but ended up getting lost and had to beach their boats in Huntington Bay. This was at night and the weather was getting dicey and pretty cold, we would imagine, but luckily they spotted the Coast Guard and hitched a ride back. No injury to the both of them, either, thankfully. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Swieciki, said, ”It is common for the Coast Guard to assist boaters like this, but it was very cool to help Russell Crowe and his friend. Crowe and his friend were very grateful to get a lift.” We’re guessing Swieciki is one of the beaming guys in the picture!

Russell Crowe knows a thing or two about saving the day onscreen, but it was the Gladiator star who needed a little rescuing over the weekend. The 48-year-old was bailed out by the U.S. Coast Guard on Saturday after he and a friend got lost while kayaking off the coast of Long Island, N.Y., according to authorities. Crowe and his pal reportedly launched from Cold Spring Harbor and were paddling around Long Island Sound when they lost their way. By nightfall, the two supposedly beached their kayaks in Huntington Bay, which is about 10 miles from where they first started. The duo hunkered down until about 10 p.m. when they were spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard, who heard the two calling out to them and swooped...

Oscar winner Russell Crowe got a hand from the U.S. Coast Guard over the weekend after a kayaking trip with a friend went awry.
Crowe and his friend, Chris Feather, went kayaking in Long Island's Cold Spring Harbor Saturday (Sept. 1). When darkness fell, the pair got "a little lost" and ended up in Huntington Bay, about 10 miles from their starting point.
"He just needed a little bit of help, he just got a little lost," Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki tells the AP. "It wasn't really a rescue, really, more of just giving someone a lift."
Crowe and Feather got a ride back to their starting point, and the actor thanked the Coast Guard on Twitter afterward -- although he takes issue with the notion he was lost.
"Kayak; Cold Spring/Huntington Harbour, thanks to Seth and the boys from the Us Coast Guard for guiding the way,...

New York — Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe lost his way kayaking in the waters off New York's Long Island and was picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and ferried to a harbor, officials said Sunday.
The 48-year-old actor was kayaking with a friend and launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon on the Long Island Sound, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki. As it got dark, the two got lost and eventually headed for shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out.
The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the area, and heard Crowe call out to them from the shore around 10 p.m., Swieciki said. The "Gladiator" actor and his friend, who Swieciki didn't recognize, paddled over to the boat. The Coast Guard officers pulled them up and, along with their kayaks, gave them a ride to Huntington Harbor.

Robot & Frank
Directed by Jake Schreier
Written by Christopher Ford
USA, 2012
When writers play tricks with their audience, they have to be careful for two major reasons. First, they need to execute those tricks deftly, but more importantly, the stories they create can’t exist solely to pull a fast one on us. Robot & Frank begins with a low-key and endearing concept—an aging cat burglar is given a robot butler to help him in his daily routine—but has a third act that feels engineered simply so the writer can shout “Gotcha!” at the viewer.
Frank Langella stars as Frank, who lives in a country house in Cold Spring, NY, in the near future. Technology has progressed to the point where video calls are common and libraries are becoming obsolete, at least as we know them in their current form. Frank lives by himself and is rapidly becoming senile,...

In the near future, elderly former jewel thief Frank (Frank Langella, Dave and Frost/Nixon) lives on his own in Cold Spring, New York, until one of his kids provides him with a Vgc-60L health-care aide. This is the premise for Robot & Frank, a sweet sci-fi comedy from new director Jake Schreier and screenwriter Christopher D. Ford. There are hidden layers to this film. Unlike other preview screenings I've attended, no one clapped at the end of this one; I assume it's because most of us were stunned at the depth of emotion in a movie based on what seems at first a silly concept.
Frank is a cantankerous man, suffering through the early stages of Alzheimer's, whose usual routine is to walk to the dying library to flirt with librarian Jennifer (Susan Sarandon) and check out duct-taped hardbacks, then head to a beauty store that was once a...

It looks like a scene out of a "Star Wars" spoof: Frank Langella and a Storm Trooper-esque robot. However, this is far from the intergalactic space tale. Instead, its "Robot & Frank," a film that takes place in Cold Spring, New York in "the near future" where robots aid humans in everyday tasks. Here, the titular duo start off as adversaries -- the robot is programmed to help Frank have a healthier life -- and end up as partners in crime. Literally. They plot out heists all around the neighborhood. In this exclusive clip, which you can watch above, you can watch the beginning of this beautiful friendship. "Robot & Frank," starring Langella, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Susan Sarandon and Peter Sarsgaard hits theaters August 17.

Cat Cora, the celebrity chef and host of "Around the World in 80 Plates" was arrested on suspicion of DUI in June when she rear-ended another vehicle in Santa Barbara, Calif. Now the Santa Barbara Police Department has released Cora's mugshot. If she looks better than expected, it's probably because the picture was taken 11 days after her arrest.
The "Iron Chef" regular showed signs of intoxication after police arrived at the scene of the accident and she admitted to having three beers earlier in the night, reports Reuters. She failed an on-site breathalyzer test. Cora told police she had been having an argument with her partner before attempting to drive home from the Cold Spring Tavern. No one was injured in the low-speed accident.

Cora's arraignment is scheduled for July 26. On Wednesday, Cora said that she regrets her actions and promised it wouldn't happen again.

Patricia Krentcil, the feisty "Tanning Mom" accused in April of taking her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning bed with her, was once an aspiring model, it has come to light. In photos taken at the time she was applying to a modeling agency, Krentcil had yet to sport her much-discussed toasted look, reports the New York Post, which spoke to Krentcil's husband, Rich, outside his Nutley, N.J., home Tuesday. "As far as I know, that was her," he confirmed about the photos, while admitting not to know who took the shots or how they might have suddenly reappeared. "It was probably a good,...
