Princess Diana’s tragic death in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997 shocked the world. It would become one of the biggest news events of the 20th century – and the only time People has ever featured a photo-only cover with no headline. Here is that cover story in its entirety.

The year 1990 was the beginning of a new decade that just had survived the neon excesses of the ’80s. “Fashion has the power to transform us. It’s not so much about who you are but who you want to be. Even those who hate fashion make a statement with what they wear, if only to say to the world, ‘I don’t give a damn.’”
Such are the wise words by fashion house owner Paul Sabine (Richard Coyle). If only Amazon‘s “The Collection” actually heeded them.
Set in Paris 1947, the atelier Paul Sabine House is tasked by a wealthy and powerful investor with restoring Paris as the haute couture capital of the world. The wartime German occupation of the city, however, has cast a long shadow, and our Parisians are having a hard time shaking off that oppression, the rationing mindset and past decisions.

‘Training Day’ Review: Antoine Fuqua’s Film in Title Only, This Good Cop, Bad Cop Routine Is Old Hat
To avoid any suspense, “Training Day” is not a strict, nor worthy, adaptation of Antoine Fuqua’s film. It’s barely a loose interpretation of the moral battle between a young, principled police officer and a corrupt veteran detective. Bill Paxton — while not trying to channel Denzel in any way — does elevate his character beyond convention, making his scenes fun, engaging, and earnest, even when they’re under siege from ennui-evoking familiarities. But even if using “fun” as a descriptor wasn’t enough to tip you off, without anything or anyone of equal excitement to match his talents, the latest CBS cop show fails to make a case for its existence.

The original “24” was never intended to be sensitive entertainment. Kiefer Sutherland’s long-running Fox drama series didn’t aim to set an example for peace-seeking American audiences — not during a time of war. Rather, it served as wish fulfillment for fans deathly afraid of overseas terrorists crossing our borders and attacking our homes. Given its era, the extreme tactics employed by Jack Bauer to protect us were understandable. It’s what America wanted, and, on some level, what we needed: a hero to save us.
This is not the case for “24: Legacy,” a reboot of the ticking-clock action franchise we might want (if only for those ‘member berries) but do not need. Here we have a new special agent running the show, ready to protect us from a fresh batch of “others.” However, the original premiered just two months removed from 9/11; this “24” debuts as America copes with a new...

A few weeks ago, Syfy released the below catch-up video for “The Expanse,” with one of the best conceits imaginable for getting new audiences interested in the sci-fi drama: the events of Season 1, as recreated by cats. (A “recat” video, if you will.)
This video does serve as a relatively basic reminder of the major plot arcs of the first season, but if you think that by watching this you’ll be able to dive into the second season as a new viewer, you probably won’t have much luck understanding what’s going on. “The Expanse” has little interest in easing viewers back into the sprawling and complicated universe it built over the course of Season 1 — because there’s simply too much story to tell.

In 2004, filmmaker Pascale Lamche directed “Accused #1: Nelson Mandela,” a documentary about the untold story of the the Rivonia Trial which featured exclusive interviews with Nelson Mandela and all the surviving co-accused. Now, Lamche is revisiting the Mandelas in her latest documentary “Winnie,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The first look at the doc introduces audiences to Winnie Mandela, the wife of Nelson Mandela and misunderstood female political figure who, while her husband was in jail for 27 years, fought on the front line and took steps to inspire an uprising.
Per the documentary’s description, the film “pieces together and properly considers her life and contribution to the struggle to bring down Apartheid from the inside, with intimate insight from those who were closest to her and with testimony from the enemies who sought to extinguish her radical capacity to shake up the order of things.

Jeremy Renner out-toughs Matt Damon in the fourth Bourne installment, and parkour fans will be delighted. But is the franchise already outmoded?
Legacy projects are very fashionable with the political classes: George W Bush had his George W Bush Presidential Centre; Tony Blair had his reform of the public sector. Fans of John Morton's BBC mockumentary Twenty Twelve will remember apparatchiks debating the way Olympic facilities can be used after the Games are over. Perhaps executives at Universal Pictures, pondering this movie project at the script stage, were telling each other that it should be called The Bourne Sustainability or The Bourne Inclusivity.
The fourth movie in the Bourne franchise is Bourne without Bourne, a bit like the TV show Taggart carrying on after the loss of the title character. But Jason Bourne is not dead. He has not "bequeathed" us this situation in that sense: what seems to...

Why is a general so lionized hanging up his uniform for a back-bench position? Jamie McIntyre on why Petraeus is headed for the CIA-and not the Pentagon-and how he can help the agency that helped kill Osama bin Laden. Plus, full coverage of bin Laden.
The whispers that began floating around Washington last month that Afghanistan commander David Petraeus was in line to run the CIA were initially dismissed as bizarre rumors.

Why would the most celebrated American general of the post-9/11 era, credited with saving Iraq and charged with salvaging Afghanistan, accept a post where he would be a second-tier adviser to the president on intelligence matters, after the director of national intelligence?
But given the CIA's prominent role in the killing of Osama bin Laden, the once-beleaguered agency is suddenly seen as hot.

Minnesota House Majority Douchbag Leader Matt Dean hates the hell out of Neil Gaiman. No, really. In an recent session in which the House was discussing state funding for the arts, Dean called Gaiman a:
“pencil-necked little weasel who stole $45,000 from the state of Minnesota.”
Dean is referring to a public appearance that Gaiman made to the Stillwater Library in Minnesota back in 2010 in which the author was paid $40,000 for his time. This caused a bit of controversy, but Gaiman issued the following level-headed statement on the matter over at his blog to clear up the matter:

Michael Sheen in Tron: Legacy
Photo: Walt Disney Pictures When I first heard Michael Sheen talk about the original Tron I figured he was pulling my leg. I mean, how can it be possible for a Welsh actor best known for his spot on replications of Tony Blair and David Frost to actually claim the original Tron was the film that made him want to become an actor. The former president comments on last weekend’s affair while in Atlanta for the First Annual World Leadership Awards!
Bill Clinton was surrounded by celebs like Justin Bieber, Usher, and Ciara at last night’s First Annual World Leadership Awards in Atlanta, but still couldn’t help but talk about daughter Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in Rhinebeck, New York last weekend! The normally tight lipped Bill told Entertainment Tonight the wedding was “wonderful” before receiving the Service Legacy Award. Awwww!
The rest of the evening featured musical performances from the above named singers, but sadly we could not find a photo of Justin and Bill! It looks like the Biebz may have finally taken a night off from his Twitter, though he did take time to thank his pal Usher for the evening.
Bill’s daughter Chelsea meanwhile is away on her honeymoon with fiance Marc Mezvinsky, the destination of which is still unknown!

Update: Well, I doubt it even more now as Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere has learned it's Not the 2011 telecast their discussing moving, it's the 2012 date, which makes sense. Nevertheless, I think pretty much everything I said below still comes into play when considering an Oscar move to January.
Nikki Finke at Deadline is reporting last night's Board of Governors meeting of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences involved a discussion that would move the 2011 Oscars from their currently slotted February 27th ceremony to an undecided January date. The news arrived on the heels of the very early announcement of Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer as producers of the 83rd Academy Awards. If you'll remember, it wasn't until September last year that Laurence Mark and Bill Condon were tapped to produce the 2010 Oscars. Finke insinuates the early notice was due to Academy President Tom Sherak's interest in exploring a January shift.

Not much longer now. In six more months we'll finally get to see the awe-inducing glory of Disney's "Tron Legacy." I have no reservations about expressing my unabashed excitement for this movie. The original is a childhood favorite and this new one, based on the trailer and everything else that I've seen, has me totally sold. Now I know there's someone else who shares my excitement: "Twilight" star Michael Sheen.
I spoke to Sheen recently about his role in the new HBO film "The Special Relationship," which brings an end to his Tony Blair trilogy, and of course I had to ask for some info on "Tron."
"I've only seen what everyone else has seen so far," he said. "Everything I've said so far, in terms of giving away facts about the character and facts about the story, I've said everything that I'm allowed to say. So I can't reveal anything more.

I cherish "verbal economy". Getting to the bottom of something — to the core level of it — while utilizing the smallest amount of verbiage possible is something that I am profoundly fascinated with. It drives me crazy when someone is trying to make a point, and instead of stating the main crux of their position, they wax on with twenty minutes of preamble.
So, I'll try my damnedest to make this intro quick and to the point.
I am supposed to talk to you today about "competition", but I don't want to, so I'm not going to. Instead, let's talk about what the very core of the word "competition" boils down to: winning and losing. And there's a lot to talk about.
Here's the deal: Right this very second, as you sit wherever you are and read this post, one of two things is taking place in your life. You are...

I have a thoroughly boring day job wherein I spend 8 hours a day sitting in front of a computer terminal entering data from health care forms. It doesn’t take a whole lot of brain power. Lucky me, we’re allowed to bring our mp3 players of choice and listen to music or whatever to keep us from slamming our foreheads into our monitors. I loaded up my iPod Nano with all the music I could stand to listen to and did my thing. The only problem was, I would zone out and get into the music and want to sing along. Not so bad for me, really, except for the fact that it’s generally frowned upon in a room full of other computer drones. They have their own shit to listen to.

Mj Documentary? The King of Pop continues to be incredibly lucrative, even in death. The latest posthumous venture concerns the "...rights to the approximately 80 hours of high-definition, full dress rehearsal footage captured by Aeg Entertainment, the company behind Jackson's concert series." It's the rehearsal footage for the "This Is It" series of 50 live shows that would have taken place at London's O2 Arena. were it not for Michael's tragic death in June. "According to U.S. media and movie industry reports, Sony Pictures is among the lead bidders offering more than $50 million Us for rights (to this footage)" Financially, this is money extremely well spent, and necessary cash on the part of Aeg Entertainment. "Aeg Live had invested $20 million to $30 million in the arena show, not including any advance paid to Jackson's camp, according to Billboard." "According to reports, several of the 50 concert dates were insured...but according to insurance industry insiders,...

I had a peculiar message on Twitter earlier, asking question about my recent article on the Comic Con footage shown for Tron. The question was simple enough:
“Michael Sheen was rumored to be in Tron: Legacy, but it was never confirmed. Did they confirm it at Comic Con?.”
Of course, not being an inherent fan of the film I responded quite innocently:
“My info came directly from the publicity dept promoting Tron in the UK - so it must be true.”
What happened next? Well after some probing by MSheenOnline Disney finally confirmed that Michael Sheen’s has been cast and that Sheen’s casting may be more significant than I thought - he’s the primary villain for Tron: Legacy!
So did my article contribute to this little slip up? Most definitely. Do I have any reservations about this? Not at all. My information came directly from a press...

This morning, Wake-Up Video tipped its hat to the swearing in of Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States who took office on this day in 1850. But there’s another historical note today that bears mentioning: Today is Nikola Tesla’s birthday. Since his death in 1943, Tesla has gained the reputation as being a woefully underrated contributor to the world of science. His experiments with conducting alternating electrical current were the most important in the history of energy, but even though Tesla’s AC ultimately beat out rival Thomas Edison’s DC, Edison’s offensives against Tesla left him as a historical footnote for decades.
But Tesla also had a great effect on music — and not just because he created technology that made wireless transmission (like radio waves) possible. A handful of musicians have gained inspiration from Tesla’s reputation as a genius, a troublemaker and an underdog.
