In the director's commentary, Neil Armfield said he almost cut that scene out because he was worried people would believe it would work. Thus leading to accidental deaths. Candy said that she'd been clenching her fists her entire life--meaning she'd always been angry and frustrated with her mother and it was driving her insane. If you recall how her mother reacted about the whip cream it would appear that her mother was very rigid and uptight. As a result Candy had become rigid and uptight. She found the drugs to be her way of relaxing. Her mother's comment about her being a "beautiful girl" indicates that her mother saw herself as having no responsibility for the path her daughter was going down. She blamed Dan, and saw no fault of her own. That's why Candy blew up.

The tattoo has nothing to do with the film. It's Heath's real life tattoo that says KAOS, which stands for the names of his mum and three sisters: Kate, Ashleigh, Olivia, and Sally.

Spoiler!! Why didn't Dan want to be with Candy anymore after she came back? If she was better, why couldn't they have began a new life together, drug free?

Their relationship was toxic. Dan wasn't clean (or might have been, but wasn't doing ok) while Candy was. He knew if they got back together, he'd ruin it again for Candy and she was doing well. They had an unhealthy Co-dependent relationship. This is obvious throught the film.
