In Moscow in 1812, during Napoleon's expedition, cannon thunder and fires break out. They herald the arrival of the Emperor's army ready to invade the capital. Later on, a general, Lieutenant Joyeuse, Intendant-General Clapier and Commandant Valbert take up residence in a building still standing adjoining the Kremlin.
