Some daring choices regarding cinematography and camera placement. A
claustrophobic, insular world. The story left the audience (given only
a vague sense of expectation) unfulfilled. The lead character Bruno
(Laurent Lucas) failed to elicit empathy on the part of this viewer;
insufficient supporting characters to add dimension to Bruno.
But perhaps this is the point: the obsessed has time only to sleep and
to obsess. He is by definition one-dimensional; such is the world of
the auditory voyeur.
I wanted to ask the director at the post-screening Q&A at Facets
Cinematheque in Chicago if he had been influenced by Coppola's "The
Conversation" and Kieslowski's "Red". The question of length has to be
addressed in a tighter re-edit.
Co-written by Emmanuele Bernheim, who also wrote the similarly toned
"Swimming Pool" (2003).
