Good, I suppose, but depressing, 29 mai 2008
Auteur : vchimpanzee de North Carolina
Ellen and Jake both grew up on farms in Wisconsin, in a community called Grambah. Jake's brother Mitch turned out the way his father wanted, but Jake wanted to be an artist and he never could please his father. In high school, Ellen and Tom were prom queen and king, but Jake wanted to be with Ellen.
Ellen and Jake did end up together, and they had two children, Amy and Bert. Jake sold art supplies in Chicago, but now he has lost his job and Ellen has gotten a job teaching at St. Michael's, the school she and Jake graduated from. The children hate the idea of leaving the big city, but until Jake can find a job and the family can afford a house, they will have to live with his parents Fritz and Mary Margaret at "Vinegar Hill". Fritz is still farming and impossible to please, and Mary Margaret copes, trying to hide the fact she is still grieving over the loss of her son. Ellen's best friend from high school is now teaching there, and it's just like the old days again; she's SOOOO excited!
Jake ends up having to travel, which puts additional strain on a marriage that is already in trouble. Tom, now the sheriff, has never gotten over Ellen. Jake also meets someone, a beautiful lingerie saleswoman willing to listen. The children learn to deal with their new situation, while Fritz just gets more and more surly and demanding. Mary Margaret's sister Salome is a weird cat lady, though nothing compared to the one on "The Simpsons".
There are dark secrets in this community. A serial rapist has never been caught, and something is buried on Vinegar Hill.
Don't be misled by the opening. I suppose this could be called a family movie, but it's very dark, and moral standards seem kind of lax; it's hard to believe any of these people go to church, much less attend what appears to be a Christian school (the word Catholic is never used, but there is a "Father Bork" and communion appears to be distributed in the Catholic way). At the very least it would have to be a movie children would watch with their parents. I wouldn't recommend it for young children.
Tom Skerritt and Betty Buckley both give very good performances. I suppose the other actors do a good job too.
The mysteries turn out to be complicated and interesting, and the ending is satisfying though not particularly pleasant. We knew something bad was coming.
It seems like a typical CBS TV-movie from the days when Sundays were movie nights.
Odd Story with a twist ending, Outstanding performance by Tim Guinee., 25 mai 2008

This is a rather odd and slow moving movie at first as a family of 4 has lost it's way in the big city due to the aspiring artist Father's loss of work and income. Mary Louise Parker gives another one of her stunning performances that unfortunately gives the audience the answers they seek during the last 10 minutes of the movie (e.g. Boys On The Side).
As the movie begins, The family of four returns to the father's parent's home in a small country town where both parents have a past, that does after all come together while at first it is hard to imagine how these two came together. As they return to the Grandparent's home, they find a broken, regimented old woman and a hardened old man that is as many father's from the era, trying too hard to be a tough guy and has broken many souls around him. As the family stays, the grandson meets some rights of passage he's not quite ready for, nor should he be, by the grumpy old grandfather, giving way to an unfortunate seen that could have easily been left out or smoothed over with the family pet.
Tim Guinee, plays a distant, but as you can tell, tormented soul that has lost most of his life to the pain from the past. He readily admits the farm has spoiled his life and way of thinking which leads to some awkward moments. He fails to stand up to his father or tortured mother as they try to make the best of the situation of returning home to parents for financial reasons as married adults with children.
Mary Louise Parker is stunning and gives a great performance as well, however the movie moves her roll slowly. This seems to be a trend with her rolls as she shines greatly in the last few minutes of the movie with an unexpected twist. (pre-WEEDS appearances)
Perhaps the hardest moment of the movie was watching Tim Guinee grab his reluctant father holding a shotgun pointed directly at him and his wife and hugs him. While the audience is left wondering ???????, 'why is this man hugging the man that has broken his spirit since childhood.' Tim Guinee in his awkward distant role forgives his father and removes his fear of his now fragile abusive father who you find has had some pain as well. Unfortunately, his awkwardness and distance in the movie at first give him the appearance of just being a new or stiff actor. Neither is the case.
The ending was quite nice as Tim Guinee does forgive his father and walks off with his earlier estranged wife, Mary Louise Parker. They get into the Volvo Wagon and drive off.
Unfortunately, the children are left out of the last minutes of the film where this film could have supported showing that the past does not have to repeat itself, however the feeling is portrayed.
This film was the first time that I have ever noticed Tim Guinee in any role, and at first thought he was John Hensley from As the World Turns or at least his brother in life, and his portrayal of the role initiated my search to discover his identity and writing this review. After looking at IMDb he has a Very Extensive resume in almost 100 noted appearances.

CBS Recently Has Aired This Movie. It Was Made In 2005, But They Played It Again In 2008.
I Like The Volvo. This Increases My Rating Of This Movie From A 1 To A 3.
But It Is Very Typical For This Family Of Two Drivers To Have Just One Car. And Just Like Many "Family" Films, The Children Are Quite Young. They Start Off Reading A Story, Making Me Think They Are Trying To Copy "Rigoletto", But I Don't Think What Happens In The Book That The Family Reads Is In The Lives Of The Characters Of Vinegar Hill. They Move North, To Wisconsin. North Is Too Cold For Me. They Move In With The Husband's Parents. The Father Of The Husband Is A Trigger Happy Old Man That Is Very Cruel To Everybody. The Mother Does Very Little About This. Neither Does Her Sister... The Wife Becomes Irritated. She Is Now Comforting Her Dying Mother In Law, Who Tells Her Something...
The Husband Lost His Brother A While Ago. There Were Two Others, Twins, That "Died" Around Their Birth. Terrible Decisions. Why Doesn't The Mother In Law Give The Twins To Her Sister?! And How Were They Able To Get Away With So Many Deaths?! The Couple Gets Into Their Volvo And They All Leave The Grumpy Old Man To Be Miserable After He Attempts To Shoot Somebody Else.
