Mickey's Castle Caper
hellraiser710 September 2021
Mickey Mouse is one of my favorite yesteryear animated characters as he's been a big part of my childhood. I always remember plenty of the animated shorts that I saw from renting out some videos at my local video store "Video City" as well as watching some of them on "This Disney Channel". And of course, he's the star of one of my favorite Christmas movies "Mickey's Christmas Special." Though when it comes to video games with the main Disney man, it's kind of hit or miss but thankfully this is one of those hits. This game is one of my favorite Disney licensed games of all time.

It's nothing new as it has the typical format of your damsel in distress, of course that damsel is Minnie Mouse and you as Mickey have to rescue her, but you have your labors to complete to get to her, in other words go from point A to B. Yeah, nothing new but it's always in the execution that makes the game stand out, that keeps the game from blending too much together with many others in the genre.

The control is solid it's the typical functions of any platform action game. From a jump attack and your projectile weapon which are apples or crystal balls which are the most useful as they can destroy certain walls but also could do a good deal of damage on enemies. Music is good, it really has the right feel for the game as it has that feel of music you would hear in most of the Disney shorts and most importantly has that cheerful tone to it.

But I feel what makes this game stand out is in its presentation. In a way this game slightly predates "Sonic the Hedgehog" which of course came shortly latter. Mainly from certain obstacles in levels like those block elevators that each go different directions as well as going downhill fast. Certain hidden areas which contain items along with each magic gem you collect in the end of the level much like the Chaos emeralds. But most notable it's the expressions of Mickey which are lively, this really helps in enhancing the effect of playing as the animated mouse, it's just really cool just seeing him make any kind of expression as you play along.

I really like the graphical designs of each of the level each of them is always a different theme, but all have one thing in common as their all spell out Disney. Two favorite levels are the toy level and the candy land level, those I love because of how colorful they are and as a kid they were two of the things I love in life.

Let alone in one part stage of the toy level you have a button that lets you switch the environment upside down, which I thought was cool and is a rare concept utilized except in games like the arcade game "Strider" and "Metal Storm" for the NES. Let alone there are different challenges in them all which helps in keeping the game fresh.

You have some colorful sub enemies that are each different in each level and fit the themes of them. From mini walking trees and mushrooms in the forest level, to walking Toy Soldiers, Toy Planes, and Unicycling Clowns in the Toy Level. There are also some memorable if easy bosses to fight in each of them, from a tree face that you can say is the Disney version of the "Evil Dead 2" tree but one that's my favorite is this candy-colored snake dragon, it just seems to have just these pleasant expressions you almost feel bad for beating it.

This really helps in giving the game an accessibility as it's a game not just for kids that are familiar or just starting to get familiar with the Disney mascot but mainly for the teens and adults that are familiar with the mouse. Playing this game really gave me a good throwback feeling, like I was watching some lost Mickey Mouse short or even a lost retro Disney movie.

Yeah, the game is on the easy side which is why for some it might feel like it ended quickly just as it began. This makes the game sort of your weekend rental game, it's a good game to start out with for beginners of the platform action genre, but also, it's just simply a fun game for any fan of Disney to play or even just any fan of the platform action genre and gamer that just feels like a light breezy play.

For anyone into Mickey Mouse or just Disney in general, this is a castle tour with the Mouse worth taking.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.

Twice the power, half the fun

Having played my way through the Master System AND the Mega Drive versions of this game back in the day (both were rather different) I can confirm that the 8-Bit Master System incarnation is somehow better than its 16-Bit sibling. The MS version was based more on exploring and secrets with some Super Mario-style gameplay with the MD version was just a straight, simple, and short platformer.

Both feature Mickey venturing into said castle to rescue Minnie from the evil with Mizrabel and similarly-themed levels, but virtually everything beyond that point is different. The MS version actually feels like you're exploring a castle while the MD version feels more disconnected.

I've always preferred the sequel, World of Illusion more, but CoI is a fine game that deserves its regard as a classic, however fleeting.

Mickey must save Minnie from a witch

This review is only based on the Genesis incarnation of the game. One day I shall play the Master System version of the game and score it collectively, but right now I am only referring to the Genesis or Mega Drive version. What to say? It is your basic platform game that has that distinct Genesis feel to it. The music, the graphics all scream Genesis! It is a short game though and does not provide all that much challenge as each level is pretty straight forward. I hear the Master System has a bit more exploring and such to it, which means I will definitely have to play it as that is what this game sorely lacks.

The story has Mickey and Minnie dancing in the fields. This upsets a witch who kidnaps Minnie and takes her to a castle of illusion where Mickey must navigate various stages such as a forest stage, a toy land, a mountain type zone, a place where you are on a desk and then in a candy world and a clock tower type world. The game plays like an arcade game, which is a trademark of many of the early Sega Genesis or Mega Drive games.

It is fun, it is also short. One day I hope to play the Master System version so that I may do a comparison review. However, it is kind of nice that it is so short as these days games take like 40 hours for your most basic games. Nice to play a game that just provides a brief distraction instead.
