Although there is an abundance of animes revolving around the disciplines and complex themes of ninjutsu set across various settings or time periods, the mystique associated with the genre always finds a steady fanbase among viewers with each new venture. Therefore, a couple of years ago, when it was announced that the creative minds behind the anime adaptations of Jujutsu Kaisen, Afro Samurai, and Batman Ninja were collaborating to create an original Shinobi-themed anime series for Adult Swim, titled Ninja Kamui, it was received as a welcome surprise by otaku worldwide.
After the release of the pilot episode of Ninja Kamui this weekend, viewers found themselves hooked on the series almost instantly, as the tried and tested method of the Shinobi theme perfectly complementing the emotional core of a story has worked out pretty well. With the first episode, the series has also succeeded in weaving intrigue as it barely...

Anime is more popular than ever. The accessibility of streaming and simulcasting make it easier than ever to be up to date with new shows as they air in Japan. Likewise, there are many big celebrities being open about their admiration for the medium and how they pull inspiration from it, raising awareness to even bigger crowds. Artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Jamie Lee Curtis talked about their love for anime, Samuel L Jackson produced "Afro Samurai" and even Michael B. Jordan directly referenced anime when making "Creed 3."
And yet, it is arguably "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" that makes it official: anime is mainstream now. While filmmakers like Jordan Peele have long drawn inspiration from anime, we haven't really seen a project from a franchise as well-known as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" not only reference an anime show but actually make it a part of the plot -- until now.

Released in 2021, "Yasuke" is an anime miniseries created by LeSean Thomas for Netflix. Based on a legendary figure from Japanese history, the titular Yasuke is an African man who comes to Japan with some Jesuit missionaries and eventually becomes a samurai in the service of Lord Oda Nobunaga. When Nobunaga and his forces are destroyed by another warlord, Yasuke flees and finds a quiet retirement as a boatman outside a small village. When he's asked to help a sick little girl get to a doctor, he soon finds himself called on to fight once again.
With only six episodes, it's entirely likely that "Yasuke" will leave you wanting more. Fortunately, there are lots of other anime series out there for you to watch, and quite a few of them have similar settings and themes. We've put together a list of anime you should check out once you've watched Yasuke, and...

I remember when I became the showrunner of my first live-action series, “Supah Ninjas,” I thought I had arrived.
Somehow, against all odds, this show I created with my partner Eric S. Garcia was shooting on the Paramount lot. On the same stage as “Family Ties.” I was officially a part of Hollywood history. When I set foot on stage, I was surprisingly whisked away by an A.D. “Surely,” I thought, “I was being taken to my fancy director’s chair that would make a killer humble-post on my socials.” But instead, I found myself in the holding area with the extras. I learned two things that day. I did not look like someone’s idea of a showrunner. And the holding area is hard to leave.
It was a good reminder that perception shapes reality – and you can literally be trapped by someone else’s perception. It’s...

Audio elements and sound design, especially the score, are as fundamental to animation as the visuals. The proper use of music at the right time can make the action soar and it’s genuinely exciting that more experimental and passionate creators are embracing the sonic possibilities that television allows. Flying Lotus is an innovative musician with a flair for the extraordinary that cut his teeth on many of the surreal animated series that fill Adult Swim’s programming block.
In addition to his frequent collaborations with Adult Swim, Flying Lotus’ music can be heard in everything from The Boondocks, to Grand Theft Auto V, to episodes of Atlanta and Insecure. Flying Lotus approaches art like a wondrous game and the cleansing energy that comes from his music feels like it’s trying to do something important beyond simple entertainment. Exclusive: The Asian and Asian American community in the country has had a rough couple of weeks. One could also argue they have had a rough couple of years — or even decades — since the first Asian set foot on the soil of America. Nonetheless, now is the time for authentic, humanizing representation of Asian and Asian Americans to bolster community morale and to bring light to a time when things seem so dark.
The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) and major industry partners have launched the ninth annual Cape New Writers Fellowship, the premier non-studio professional development program that trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood. The fellowship boasts multiple showrunners and graduates that have been staffed on over 50 shows across all major network, cable, and streaming platforms.
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship was co-founded and is co-chaired by Steve Tao and Leo Chu. The sessions include master classes, panels, and workshops, as well as writing labs, in which Fellows revise their scripts under one-on-one mentorship with high-level industry professionals.
This year’s mentors and speakers include Monica Macer, Melinda Hsu Taylor, Sunil Nayar, Teresa Hsiao, Alexander Woo, Albert Kim, Tanuj Chopra, Kyle Harimoto, Jason Ning, Vicky Luu, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Nazrin Choudhury, and April Shih, who has the special distinction of being the first alumni of the Cape Fellowship to return as a mentor.
“For the past 30 years, Cape has fought to break barriers in entertainment for our stories to be heard because we all know racism is not new,” said Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape Executive Director. “Dehumanizing tropes in media such as the Yellow Peril, Perpetual Foreigner, and Model Minority leads directly to physical violence against us in the real world, which is why this is more than a representation issue, it’s a social justice issue.”
The participants of the 2021 Cape New Writers Fellowship are:
Bryson Chun is a Hawaiian filmmaker who has produced films that have screened for PBS, The Smithsonian Museum, The Criterion Collection, and festivals worldwide. He was a screenwriting fellow for Sundance, imagineNATIVE, LA Skins, and ‘Ohina Labs. Most recently, he was selected for The Blacklist’s Inaugural Indigenous List, which spotlights some of the best Indigenous film and television writers working within the U.S. Darek Cioch is a Korean and Polish American writer from Seattle. After studying film at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he began his entertainment career working for Anonymous Content and HBO. Since then he has been a writers’ assistant for television shows on ABC, NBC and FX. Darek is currently a researcher on FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story. Jane Yubin Kim is a Korean American writer and performer based in Los Angeles. After graduating from Ucsb where she studied film, she worked in post production and regularly performed and wrote comedy at the Upright Citizens’ Brigade, where she was a Ucb Diversity scholarship recipient. She is repped by Authentic. Kyle Kubo & Fatima Liaqat are a comedy writing duo/life duo who first collaborated at BuzzFeed writing and producing viral videos. Kyle is biracial Japanese/white, Fatima is a queer, disabled Pakistani, and together they have a passion for writing comedy scripts that blend with other genres from musicals to sci-fi to horror and historical fiction. Their work has placed in Austin Film Festival and the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices competition and has been showcased at Ucb theater stage, Vice, Vanity Fair, Bustle, Thrillist and more. Olive Song is a Chinese-American writer from the suburbs of Georgia. After surviving homelessness, foster care, and a professional figure skating career, they moved on to earn an Mfa in screenwriting from USC. A part-time YouTube binger and a full-time storyteller, Olive has worked with both the Sundance Institute and Participant Media and is currently a Showrunner’s Assistant for an upcoming hour-long TV drama. Vinita Mehta & Richard Nguyen were raised by immigrants, and went on to study psychology at Columbia and Harvard, respectively. Their writing is informed by shared experiences in TV news and documentary production, providing psychotherapy, and D&i consulting. Their screenplays have been a Cinequest Top Ten Finalist, Humanitas New Voices Finalist, and Tracking Board’s Top 100 Pilots and Winner of the Mentorship Prize. Sonali Mehta is a TV writer’s assistant and former video game story editor. A genre-agnostic, all of Sonali’s writing centers around one relevant and complex theme. Sonali’s favorite shows include Succession, Breaking Bad, and Killing Eve. She is repped by Tulsea. Yugo Nakamura grew up in Tokyo as a half-Japanese, half-Jewish boy who spoke mostly Japanese. His family abruptly moved to NYC just before high school. Film and TV is what got him through the intense culture shock, which lead to his undergraduate film degree. Yugo had a career in postproduction before he set out to earn his Mfa in Screenwriting at the AFI Conservatory, graduating in 2020.
After graduating from the fellowship, the participants join a distinguished roster of alumni including Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt (Star Trek: Section 31), Lauren Moon, Julie Wong (Grey’s Anatomy), Brian Shin (The Good Doctor), Eileen Shim (House of the Dragon), Kevin Lau, Helen Shang, Lisa Bao (Nancy Drew), Aaron Ho (Fresh Off the Boat), Tania Lotia (Witcher: Blood Origin), Nikhil Jayaram (Shades of Blue), Marisa Tam (L.A.’s Finest), Franklin jin Rho (Pachinko), Allyssa Lee (Charmed), Teresa Huang (MacGyver), Thomas Wong (Good Trouble), Jeremy Hsu (Jimmy Kimmel: Live!), Ken Kobayashi (Hit Monkey), Chris Wu (Man in High Castle), Joanne Lee (Coop and Cami Ask the World), Gabriel Ho (Clarice), Andrew N. Wong (Superman & Lois), D. Dona Le (FBI: Most Wanted), Nathan Ramos-Park (Club Mickey Mouse), Leonard Chang (Snowfall), Ken Cheng (House of Chow) and Iram Parveen Bilal (I’ll Meet You There), among others.

Not exactly a film as much as a prolonged music video, which actually accompanies Sturgill Simpson’s homonymous album, “Sound and Fury” manages, nevertheless, to be quite impressive as a spectacle.
The anime consists of various, mostly dystopian stories, including one of a scavenger of mementos from the street and another where a number of colored people are hunted by forces of evil as they try to survive. However, the one that truly steals the show is the initial one, which actually appears a number of times through the film.
In this case, two quite stylish villains in suits, one who uses poison and one a gun, attack a Buddhist monastery where they kill a number of monks brutally. A bit later, another individual who wears a futuristic samurai suit attacks the two men who seem to have become lords of some sorts, in a rather impressive action sequence that...

Developed as a commemoration to Osamu Dazai’s 110th birthday, “Human Lost” is the anime adaptation of “No Longer Human”, which is considered the masterpiece of the Japanese author and ranks as the second-best selling novel in Japan. Add to this that Katsuyuki Motohiro of “Psycho Pass” is Chief Director, Fuminori Kizaki of “Afro Samurai” the director and that Polygon Pictures, who were in charge “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters” the production studio, and you have all the elements for a masterpiece. Let us see if that is actually the case.
Funimation will be releasing “Human Lost” in select locations across the Us (October 22 (Subtitled) & 23 (Dub)) and Canada (November 6 (Subtitled) & 9 (Dub))
The story takes places in Tokyo 2036, where medical treatment has almost conquered death, allowing people to regenerate no matter what their injuries and to reach a 120-year-old lifespan, free from illness, by means of internal nanomachines and the “S.

1. “The Politician” (available September 27)
Why Should I Watch? It’s Ryan Murphy’s first original series for Netflix. That’s the narrative TV enthusiasts and industry titans will be watching, more so than any high school election shenanigans, when “The Politician” debuts this month. After signing a whopping $300 million overall deal in February 2018, Murphy is rolling out his first big-ticket Netflix series, and his deal (along with more than few others) is meant to help maintain subscribers as the O.G. streaming giant faces new competition from the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+. The size of its audience is even more important than whether or not it’s any good, but awards prospects are top of mind for this star-studded venture. During his time at FX, Murphy served as an enticing dual threat: prestige and popularity. Now, he’s got to carry that over to Netflix.
Bonus Reason: Well, the cast is pretty stacked.

I know you all won’t say not to watch a wicked cool live-action fan film that features Afro Samurai fighting Mugen! This is a three minute segment from a 30-minute fan film called Afro Samurai Champloo.
The film comes from Team Red Productions and was directed, shot, and storyboarded by Joseph Le. It’s explained that they will release the short in parts every week. I’ve included the fight scene clip along with the first part of the film and it’s seriously badass!
I love the style and tone and the way the fight sequences were shot were extremely high-energy and super rad! There’s no doubt that this is going to put a smile on your face. It’s cool seeing these two characters with completely different personalities and styles face off with each other.

In the 1950s, Batman was transformed into a variety of beings or wore a colorful assortment of costumes to goose sales. Thankfully, that silliness was retired with the New Look and wasn’t resurrected until the Elseworlds what if stories of the 1990s. That same approach has now crept from the page to the screen with Batman Ninja, out now on DVD from Warner Home Entertainment.
This anime-style adventure comes from director Junpei Mizusaki, (producer of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), working from a script by Kazuki Nakashima and character designs from Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai). As a result, it comes with a strong pedigree for the creative approach.

The visually stunning Batman Ninja is the creative result of a trio of anime’s finest filmmakers – director Jumpei Mizusaki (Opening Animation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), writer Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), and character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) produced the original movie with Warner Bros. Japan. The script was then reinterpreted and rewritten for English-language distribution by award-winning screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia.
Batman Ninja takes a journey across the ages as Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transports many of Batman’s worst enemies to feudal Japan – along with the Dark Knight and a few of his allies. The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. I’ve long had a soft spot for stories that transplant Batman to different times. The best is probably Gotham By Gaslight, which imagines a Victorian Batman tangling with Jack the Ripper, but I also have a huge soft spot for Grant Morrison’s time-hopping miniseries Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, in which we see Caveman Batman, Witchhunter Batman, Pirate Batman, Cowboy Batman and 30s Gumshoe Batman. So, I’m naturally over the moon with this new trailer for Batman Ninja.
First announced at the New York Comic-Con, the project is the brainchild of DC and a number of anime and manga superstars. Namely, Junpei Mizusaki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), Takashi Okazashi (Afro Samurai), and Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann).
From what I can tell from the trailer, the movie opens with Batman and the Joker engaged in a typically tense battle to the death, only to find themselves hurled back to medieval Japan.

While the geek world continues to argue amongst themselves about Justice League, DC quietly just dropped a trailer for what looks to be their most exciting animated feature to date. Batman Ninja, which is a rare anime-style feature from the company, shows Bruce Wayne thrust from modern times into Medieval Japan where some friends are already waiting for him. I'm not exactly sure why Batman is the last to arrive (especially considering every past Robin and Red Hood is there), but I was all in the moment when I saw Edo Joker in action!
The film was developed by screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and the English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supa Ninjas).

Developer The Game Bakers has unleashed the launch trailer for Furi, the über-stylish skill-based actioner that is now available across PlayStation 4 and PC. Priced at $24.99 (€24.99), we learned last week that Furi was a part of the PlayStation Plus lineup for July, meaning those subscribers can download The Game Bakers’ vivid indie free of charge for the remainder of the month.
Placing a heavy emphasis on hack-‘n’-slash action and massive boss fights, Furi also recruited Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki to help create some of the “out-of-this-world adversaries” that you’ll be locking horns with throughout the course of the story.
You were captured. Look what they’ve done to you… The jailer is the key, kill him and you’ll be free. When it comes to games that came out of nowhere, Furi has been one of the biggest surprises this year. We had the chance to go hands-on with it last month at E3, and walked away with anticipation for the full release. Our time with the game was limited, but it’s fast paced action and emphasis on tight, responsive controls sat well with us. What we didn’t expect however, is that the final version would excite and surprise us even more.
Furi prefers to keep the story light and vague, but it works well for an action-focused title of this type. You take control of a mysterious samurai named The Stranger, whose driving goal is to escape the prison he finds himself in. The Stranger’s journey through the prison world he inhabits is an interesting one; rather than working your way through level after level, Furi is entirely composed of boss fights,...

Unlike most other video games out there, Furi doesn’t waste any time. What might be considered standard levels in most other titles, Furi would consider filler and a waste of time. If you’re the kind of person who looks forward to boss fights, Furi might just be up your alley.
Our hands on time with Furi was brief, but you can tell that it heavily draws its inspirations from a handful of Japanese games. Takashi Okazaki, the creator of Afro Samurai, worked on the character designs for the game, lending a very heavy Japanese aesthetic to the entire proceeding. The main character has a very ninja look, and was very reminiscent of Raiden from the Metal Gear Solid series, particularly his later appearances as a cyborg.
As I mentioned before, Furi is a game that focuses on boss fights, or more aptly, is comprised of boss fights entirely.

The main character has a very ninja look, and was very reminiscent of Raiden from the Metal Gear Solid series, particularly his later appearances as a cyborg.
As I mentioned before, Furi is a game that focuses on boss fights, or more aptly, is comprised of boss fights entirely.

Cosplayer Michael Wilson aka Knightmage has created the best and only Afro Samurai cosplay that you will ever need to see. What this guy has come up with is complete perfection and awesomely badass. He's brought this animated character to life in a way that I've never seen before. I especially love the hair and the headband which is made to look like the wind is constantly blowing around him. The photos you see here were taken by by Gwendolyn Graham and Black Apple Studios. Enjoy!

There’s no such thing as the perfect video game. There can’t be. We’ve come close a few times, with titles like Portal or Ocarina of Time, but games are made by people, and people aren’t infallible. There will always be glitches, bugs, or exploits. As a culture, gaming has grown to accept this, albeit, with a grain of salt, and move past it. Thanks to the rise of internet connected games, we’ve also benefited from patches, or in some cases, complete re-releases of games to solve issues.
It seems, however, that in 2015 all of that sort of fell by the wayside, and this year, and the holiday season especially, has been pockmarked and savaged by rampant bugs and unfinished products masquerading as full release titles. We’ve had broken games, sure, with titles like Afro Samurai 2 being so bad that it was pulled from shelves.

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma holds the second lowest Metascore of any PlayStation 4 game, at least at the time of this writing. Critics and consumers blasted the first of what was to be a three-volume continuation of the bloody, hip hop-inspired anime. In our review, we, too, chastised “the horrific graphics and sound design, poor combat and a nonsensical story.”
Weak sales were sure to follow, but a complete removal of the game from Steam and Sony’s PlayStation Store? It almost breaks my heart, until I recall Volume 1’s defective condition. In a recent CGMagazine interview, Steve Escalante (the general manager for publisher Versus Evil) disclosed the facts about Afro Samurai 2’s sudden digital exodus.
In Steve’s words:
The game was a failure. We could not do, in good conscience, volume 2 and volume 3. So we’ve begun the process, it’s been a long process to figure...

French indie studio The Game Bakers have pulled back the curtain on all-boss fighter Furi, their upcoming combat game slated for release on PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016.
Furi feeds on the tension of one-on-one fights against deadly adversaries. It’s an intense, ultra-responsive hack-and-slash with a unique mix of fast-paced sword fighting and dual-stick shooting. Each of the formidable guardians – designed by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki – has a unique and surprising combat style that requires focus and skill to defeat. Defeat one boss after another to escape this surreal prison and discover what’s waiting behind the last gate.
Says Creative Director Emeric Thoa:
I have long dreamed of making a game of pure boss fights, with a focus on dueling and besting enemies who rival your own skill and strength. Furi is designed with Japanese action games in mind — games that reward skills and reflexes, with a character that reacts immediately,...

A new indie title is headed to the PlayStation 4. Furi’s a new indie fighting game being developed by independent studio The Game Bakers, and aside from looking fun as hell to play (as you can see for yourself in the trailer above), it also looks incredibly pretty thanks to a certain individual.
The Game Bakers’ Emeric Thoa said the following in the announcement over on the PlayStation Blog:
Furi is the manifestation of this idea that’s stuck with me for the past ten years, as I grew as a designer and set up my own indie studio, The Game Bakers. Furi is a game where you fight for a reason. It’s a game that teases you before the fight, while you walk toward your fate, the same way you would be pumped up and stressed before a boxing match. As you do, you’ll start to piece...

Based on the animated series of the same name, the original Afro Samurai game was something of an underground hit with gamers, especially those that also enjoyed the TV show on which is was based. Whilst the game didn’t reach the dizzy heights of being a mainstream (aka financial) success, it did garner enough of a cult following that we finally have – some 6 years after the game was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 – a sequel. Even if its a digital-only title…
Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma is, like the first game, 3rd person action-come-beat’em-up sequel that picks up where the first game left off. Written by New York Times Best Selling Author Jim DeFelice, the story follows the path of Kuma, a cybernetically enhanced killing machine with a bear’s head who was made for one purpose, to kill Afro.

On the heels of Redacted Studios launching its manga-inspired sequel, Afro Samurai 2: Revenge Of Kuma, the developer has unveiled a gleefully violent new trailer for the game that charts the vengeful journey of our titular, rap-loving protagonist.
As a pure, unbridled hack-and-slash experience, there’s been a lot of interest in Revenge of Kuma prior to release, and Tuesday marked the debut of the title’s maiden volume. Adopting an episodic release schedule, Kuma’s ultra-violent journey will be told across three chapters, with the much-loved ‘Afro Sound’ forming the beating heart that keeps the story churning along at a brisk clip.
It’s this music that serves as part of Afro Samurai 2‘s innate charm, and the studio’s Lead Designer, President and Founder David Robinson spoke about its core musical set-up.
“What I appreciate about [Afro Samurai 2] is that it’s good music, good rap music, good storytelling. It...

I really hoped this would turn out differently. After playing a few minutes of Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma at E3 over the summer, I had hope that the mediocrity of the original could be atoned for with this unassuming but interesting looking sequel. It features a new story branching off of the original’s, what was touted as improved combat and the return of RZA and Takashi Okasaki, both of whom were integral to Afro Samurai‘s success. Unfortunately, Afro Samurai 2 isn’t just a letdown of a sequel: it’s a technical mess of a game that left me scratching my head at just about every turn.
Stealing the spotlight from the titular badass is Kuma, Afro’s adoptive brother who was defeated in the original story and presumed dead, until the opening of the game finds the bear-headed rival regaining his strength and looking for revenge.

We’re as surprised as you are, but it’s true: Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma is a real video game. After a middling first effort, which most folks quickly forgot about, the rap-loving samurai is back for more. Well…sort of.
If you weren’t a fan of the original Afro Samurai video game, you’ll be happy to hear that its developers weren’t entirely pleased either. In fact, one of the main reasons why they wanted to develop Afro Samurai 2 was to prove that they could do better. At least, that’s what the public relations guy told us during our demo.
This isn’t a game that focuses on Afro as its main character, though. Instead, you’ll be playing as Kuma. He’s the guy with the disfigured robotic bear head on his neck, and he’s looking for revenge. Fucked up, bloody and visceral revenge,...

I had absolutely no idea that there was actually a video game based on the "Afro Samurai" animated series. Then again, I wouldn't exactly call myself a gamer. But I'm sure some of you were aware, and maybe even own the game. If you are one of those folks, or a budding gamer, or a veteran who wasn't aware that a video game based on the series exists, you may be pleased to know that video game publisher Versus Evil has announced that it is developing a sequel to the first game (which was released in 2009, on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), The "Afro Samurai" game sequel is in development at Redacted Studios for next gen consoles and PC.
