We see a man fall down a hole landing on his back and groans in pain, a large metal object strikes through a man's shoulder off screen but there is a very brief spray of blood, he is then shown wounded and dead, a man is slapped around many times and choked, a boy slaps and punches a man, a man throws bowling pins at another man and then beats him to death and then shows the dead man suffered head trauma from the bowling pin in a small pool of blood, and a man is shot in the head but we cannot technically see him getting shot; the shooter is hovering above the victim, we see the victim's face and we hear a gunshot, we then see the victim laying on his side showing that he apparently dead and he is buried. There is also two references of a father beating his daughter.

There are uses of "hell", "bstrd" and "gd-dmn".

Several characters drink and smoke casually in the film. There is a discussion between two men about getting women drunk. Despite it not being obvious in the film, Plainview proggressively drinks more and more Whiskey in the film and becomes an alcoholic, and he is most likely drunk in the final scene.

A murder scene taking place at the end of the film is threatening, brutal and graphic. A violent gas explosion is depicted and a child is permanently disabled because of it. (Characters are in danger during this scene). Many scenes depict peril as characters are injured, accidentally killed or murdered.
