MARRAKECH, Morocco -- A first-time director, Ernest Abdyshaparov from the remote Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan, won the Marrakech film festival's top award, the Gold Star, with his comedy-drama Saratan. Announcing the decision at Saturday's closing ceremony, jury president Jean-Jacques Annaud described the German-backed co-production as a "little gem" that had touched the hearts of all nine members of the jury. The movie is a portrait of post-Soviet village life high in the Kyrgyz mountains, loosely focusing on a local policeman's efforts to capture a cattle thief.
