The dream of a national theatrical release still burns bright for most feature documentary filmmakers, but the reality is that traditional releases with week-long runs across the country have gotten much harder. Exhibitors complain that too many movies are opening, while viewers are increasingly watching documentaries at home via Netflix, PBS, HBO, iTunes or Amazon.

With the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival wrapping up this week, we’ve highlighted our five favorite films from the slate. Make sure to stay tuned in the coming months as we learn about distribution news for the titles. Check out our favorites below, followed by our complete coverage, and one can see the winners here.
Creepy (Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
One has to appreciate Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s winking self-awareness in calling his new feature Creepy. It’s as if the Coen brothers released a film entitled Snarky, or Eli Roth named his next stomach-churner Gory. Kurosawa, who’s still best known for Cure (1997) and Pulse (2001), two rare outstanding examples of the highly variable J-Horror genre, instills a sense of creepiness into virtually anything he does, regardless of subject matter. His latest, which sees him return to the realm of horror after excursions into more arthouse territory, certainly lives up to its name...

The world of Parkour meets teenage coming-of-age angst in Petr Oukropec‘s In Your Dreams!, and it’s a welcome mixture. Whereas most sports inherently breed competition to the point that American films must delineate good versus bad or favorite versus underdog because they underestimate their audience, the urban appropriation of French Special Forces training (Parcours du combattant) here deals in the communal spirit of freedom. There’s a kinship between participants — one highlighted by the Prague group that Egon Tobiás‘ script creates — wherein “pros” and “amateurs” alike provide a safety net with which to simultaneously practice and improve their skills. Only a handful will be picked for young Alex (Jáchym Novotný) to videotape in hopes of entering a San Francisco competition, but no one gets turned away.
This is a refreshing take on the genre for an American like me. While there’s a level of competition, courtesy of...

Berlinale receives record number of submissions.
A total of 63 feature-length and short films produced or co-produced in 35 countries have been invited to participate in the two Berlinale (Feb 11-21) competitions Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus.
The programme, aimed at children and youths, was selected from around 2,000 feature-length and short films submitted to Generation this year, which is more than in any year previously.
The selected films shed light on and challenge the nature of contradictions such as being child-like and being an adult, what is forbidden and what is permitted or the difference between subjective and objective reality.
“Young people world-wide are constantly confronted by dystopic realities not of their own making,” said Maryanne Redpath, head of Generation. “In the diverse films of this year’s programme we see them taking matters into their own hands.”

Stop! Don't touch that dial... if you like your atom-age propaganda straight up, MGM has the movie for you, an expensive 1946 docu-drama that became 'the official story' for the making of the bomb. The huge cast includes Brian Donlevy, Robert Walker, Tom Drake, Audrey Totter, Hume Cronyn, Hurd Hatfield, and Joseph Calleia. How trustworthy is the movie? It begins by showing footage of a time capsule being buried -- that supposedly contains the film we are watching. Think about that. Mom, Apple Pie, the Flag and God are enlisted to argume that we should stop worrying and love the fact that bombs are just peachy-keen dandy. The Beginning or the End DVD-r The Warner Archive Collection 1947 / B&W / 1:37 flat Academy / 112 min. / Street Date September 22, 2015 / available through the WBshop / 21.99 Starring Brian Donlevy, Robert Walker, Tom Drake, Beverly Tyler, Audrey Totter, Hume Cronyn, Hurd Hatfield, Joseph Calleia, Godfrey Tearle, Victor Francen,...

Screen Australia invested more money in factual content than in TV drama and only slightly more in narrative features in the last financial year.
Yet the funding body recouped far less from documentaries than from drama and feature films.
That emerges from an analysis of Sa's annual report for 2013-2014 which was posted on its website in October but not widely disseminated.
In that period Screen Oz provided $74.5 million in direct funding in 196 projects with aggregate production budgets of $346 million.
Of that, $24 million was invested in 22 features with total budgets of $128.5 million. In TV, $11.8 million was invested in 11 dramas worth $92.6 million and $8.3 million in four children.s projects valued at $34 million. So the TV drama sector received $20.1 million.
Some $19.1 million was funnelled into 125 docs worth $57.8 million, including development and special initiatives such as Opening Shot and Think Big.

Stand back! Stevie Nicks, that witchy fairy godmother to sisters of the moon everywhere, just released 24-Karat Gold — Songs From the Vault. The album is filled with demos from the '70s and '80s that she’s finally mastered with her favorite producer, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, the Mad Hatter behind 2011’s In Your Dreams. The new album arrives in conjunction with a U.S. tour for Fleetwood Mac, which is welcoming back into the band keyboardist-singer Christine McVie, who’d retired to the English countryside 16 years ago after developing panic attacks and a fear of flying. On October 9, Stevie will be performing on The Today Show, plus opening an exhibit at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in Soho of her personal Polaroid selfies taken from 1975 to 1987. After that, she’s packing up those shawls for more of the tour, which runs until March 18. So, on the occasion of...

If the idea that there is a Stevie Nicks vault filled with lost songs from the '70s is absolutely thrilling, her new album, 24 Karat Gold — Songs From the Vault, should give you joy. It's also her first since 2011's In Your Dreams and features a collection of lost demos, "reimagined": "[W]e found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever. I call them my 24 karat gold songs." If there's any doubt, listen to 24 Karat's first single, "The Dealer," which dates back to 1979 (Tusk!) and has that perfect "Gypsy" sound. Are there more shawls in the vault?...

In her new documentary, In Your Dreams, Stevie Nicks tells the story of the last time she acted: in a fourth-grade play about The Alamo. "It was so bad," Nicks says. She went home after that elementary-school debacle and told her mother that she was swearing off acting forever. Nicks stuck by that pledge until now: she's appearing early next year in American Horror Story: Coven, the third season of the horror anthology created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (who also collaborated on Glee and Nip/Tuck).

Interview Louisa Mellor 21 May 2013 - 07:00
We chatted to Broadchurch, Doctor Who, and Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall about success, fan theories, orange cagoules, and more...
Spoiler warning: this interview reveals the identity of the Broadchurch killer, and other series one plot details.
Years of keeping Doctor Who and Torchwood’s confidences must have been excellent preparation for the secrecy Chris Chibnall had to maintain throughout the run of his successful ITV drama, Broadchurch.
Part whodunit and part exploration of grief and loss, the David Tennant and Olivia Colman-starring series came to occupy a rare position in early 2013. Critics praised it, viewers watched it in their millions, and in its final weeks, online theories on the killer’s identity were just as widespread and meticulously constructed as anything you’d find in a Doctor Who comments section. Broadchurch fans united on Monday nights and poured reactions onto Twitter and Facebook during every ad break.

What had ETonline readers buzzing this week?
1. 'Pitch Perfect 2' Coming in 2015!
How's this for aca-mazing news?
The head of Universal Pictures just revealed Pitch Perfect 2 is coming ... in 2015. Ok, so that seems like an awfully long time to wait for a sequel to 2012's most rocking cinematic experience, but I guess you can't rush perfection.
While it's unknown if the original cast will reprise their roles (odds are on Rebel Wilson returning for sure), the sequel will also be written by Kay Cannon.
2. Ozzy O. Denies Divorce, Admits to Drug Relapse
Amidst rumors that his 31-year marriage was on the rocks, rocker Ozzy Osbourne came to the defense of his relationship with wife Sharon Monday night, meanwhile dropping the bombshell that for more than a year, he has been "in a dark place" due to a relapse with alcohol and drugs.

Reese Witherspoon may have missed her chance to play Stevie Nicks on the big screen. Despite being a fan of the 37-year-old Oscar winner, Nicks says Witherspoon's years to play her in a biopic are numbered. "I've already told her she's almost too old," the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman, 64, told Et Canada at the Toronto premiere of her new documentary In Your Dreams. "I love her, but she's like, 'I could play your mother,'" Nicks added. "I'm like, 'Ok.'" While Witherspoon may never play Nicks in a flick, it's not like she's hurting for the work. Witherspoon was snapped on the set of her new movie The Good Lie in Atlanta this...

Stevie Nicks has seemingly dismissed the possibility of Reese Witherspoon playing her in a proposed biopic.
The Fleetwood Mac singer has previously denied that a film of her life was in the works, but there continue to be consistent rumours that the movie will eventually be made.
Discussing the possible biopic with Et Canada, Nicks appeared to rule out Witherspoon as a candidate to play her on the big screen.
"I've already told her she's almost too old," Nicks commented to the news service.
She went on to joke: "I love [Reese], but she's like, 'I could play your mother', [and] I'm like okay."
Witherspoon famously won an Academy Award for her portrayal of country music icon June Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line.
Nicks is currently promoting the documentary In Your Dreams, which is about the recording of her latest solo album.

If a Stevie Nicks biopic ever does get made, it doesn't sound like it will be starring Reese Witherspoon. In a new interview with Et Canada, the Fleetwood Mac singer says she'd like Witherspoon to play her on the big screen, but thinks it may be too late. Steve Nicks' alluring life filled with the many escapades she's endured as the lead vocalist of Fleetwood Mac and a solo artist urges to one day be adapted into a biopic. Nicks had originally tabbed Reese Witherspoon to play her on the big screen, but she is now repealing her as her selection.
"I've already told [Reese] she’s almost too old," Nicks told Et Canada at the Toronto premiere of her new documentary, In Your Dreams.

Although Nicks says in the documentary, which tracks the making of her 2011 album of the same name, that she wants the 37-year-old actress to represent her in a film, she appears to have second-guessed herself in the time that has passed.
"I love her, but she's like, 'I could play your mother.' I'm like 'O.K,'" the 64-year-old singer-songwriter said.

For those who aren't already aware, Stevie Nicks is a massive "Twilight" fan. In fact, she completely credits the "Twilight Saga" for her musical inspiration of late. For instance, she told The Insider at "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" premiere this fall, "I hadn't done a record in ten years, so this story changed my life. Bella and Edward, Robert and Kristen, they changed my life and made me decide to make another record 'cause I was never going to make another record." Indeed Nicks released a solo record titled "In Your Dreams" in 2011 which included the attached song which was directly inspired by "New Moon" called "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)." Now, she's got a new one on the way - this time, it's inspired by "Breaking Dawn." 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Photo credit: Summit Ent. As detailed by HitFix, N...

When Dave Stewart first suggested to Stevie Nicks that he film the making of her 2011 solo album, “In Your Dreams,” which he co-produced, her blunt reaction was “I think you’re nuts.” However, the Eurythmics co-founder convinced Nicks by simply reassuring her “If you don’t like it, we don’t use it.” And in the end, she not only liked it, but she saw the documentary as a way to extend the shelf life of the critically-acclaimed album, which debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, but did not have the high-profile run Nicks hoped it would and fell off the...

Stevie Nicks thinks it's time for people to lay off Kristen Stewart. Fleetwood Mac's frontwoman (the band hits the road for their 2013 tour in Columbus, Ohio April 4; tickets go on sale Dec. 14) opened up to Us Weekly recently about the 22-year-old actress and her boyfriend Robert Pattinson's rocky summer. Between producing and recording music with Fleetwood Mac and relentlessly touring her own albums, Stevie Nicks is pretty busy. So busy, in fact, that her bandmates publicly expressed their frustration when she told them she wasn't going to tour as Fleetwood Mac last year. She had other priorities, namely supporting her latest and "favorite solo album," "In Your Dreams."
But this is Stevie Nicks, so even prickly bandmate and former lover Lindsey Buckingham agreed to wait. Nicks has kept her word: After a three-year break, Fleetwood Mac is heading on a 35-city tour that starts April 4th (tickets go on sale Dec. 7).
HuffPost Entertainment called Nicks to speak to her about the tour, but the genial singer was eager to chat about pretty much anything, up to and including: her advice for Rihanna, her concerns about the future of the music industry and a special letter to Kanye West she wrote but never sent.

Dave Stewart is an artist whose livelihood thrives off of collaboration. The former Eurythmics founder these days splits his time between his guest-heavy rock albums, producing other artists’ work – frequently with acts who also show on his records – and managing film and TV projects via his company Weapons of Mass Entertainment. He was just one part of a five-person supergroup SuperHeavy, with Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman and Damian Marley, and they released their first full-length last year. He produced Stevie Nicks’ new album “In Your Dreams,” and the doc of the same name, which made its bow at...

The Grey is out on DVD this week, so at last we can talk about the end … which clearly isn't
Things don't look so great for Liam Neeson at the end of The Grey. He's the last remaining survivor of an aeroplane crash in the frozen tundra, and he's hemmed in by a pack of gigantic, man-eating wolves, who aren't all that well disposed toward him because he's polished off a fair few of their mates in the previous couple of days. As the film draws to its thrilling conclusion, the seething leader of the wolf pack faces off against Neeson, and the two get set to engage in a vicious, mano a mano, winner-takes-all duel to the death. Meanwhile, the rest of the wolves move a side and give the boys room to operate. No two ways about it, Neeson's backed himself into a tight corner this time!

Stevie Nicks is many things: Goddess Of Rock, style icon, survivor, and today is her 64th Birthday. We could never hope to give her all of the proper respect she deserves, but here's a small tribute to her legacy of cryptic lyrics, ethereal stage presence, and shawls.

3. "Gypsy" - One of the definitive Fleetwood Mac songs, and one of the greatest music videos ever made.
