Sex & Nudity

  • The intro theme song for each episode shows a young female character in several erotic poses, with partial nudity.
  • Heavily implied incest between two characters, however, there are no sex scenes and it is mostly only left to implications.
  • Nudity is often shown, non-sexually. We see bare breasts and nipples a lot, and sometimes buttocks, but rarely pubic areas.
  • A girl grabs another girl (who is very child-like, mentally,) and starts squeezing her breasts.
  • A girl makes a boy touch her breast continuously and she moans with pleasure.
  • A young boy and girl, maybe 10 years old, splash around and play in the water. They take off their clothes to dry off, and are seen sitting back-to-back, naked. Some partial views of buttocks.
  • Two of the main characters who have a romantic relationship are said to be cousins. But this may mean they are extended cousins or just very close friends, as the term is often taken to mean in Japanese society. They kiss and embrace in one scene.
  • A young man undresses Nyu because her clothes are wet and she is unable to do it herself (not sexual but pretty awkward). Nipples are shown.
  • Nyu bursts out of a closet topless (again not sexual but awkward).
  • A young girl is shown at around age 9 (she is 14 now) naked from behind and her bare chest; her stepfather is telling her to undress, and she bends down and puts her buttocks in the air.
  • Brief mild sexual references.

Violence & Gore

  • A girl is stabbed in the eye.
  • A man is torn in half.
  • A lots of fatalities episodes in this anime.
  • the same young girl is thrown against a fence, strangled, and repeatedly punched. She is shown with a black eye and a bloody face after.
  • A young girl is thrown off a road and is flung against a rail. She moans as she tries to get up but is strangled and then falls into a river.
  • A girl frequently slaps a boy she likes because of embarrassment and jealousy.
  • Frequent and very graphic animated violence. Bloody scenes of decapitation and dismemberment are shown throughout, mainly through supernatural means. Entrails and organs are visible in some scenes.
  • The very first episode opens with a shot of a man's severed arm on the floor. A few seconds later, Lucy is seen holding his head.
  • In the entire series there are over 60 onscreen deaths.
  • A woman is decapitated and used as a human shield.
  • A man is killed when a pen is guided through his eye and goes through his brain and out the back of his head. This happens twice.
  • A man's heart is punched out, and the gaping wound is clearly visible. The heart, still beating, lands on another man and soils his blazer.
  • A man is decapitated. His father has his head mounted on a platter.
  • Some children are seen being dismembered.
  • A man gets his arm broken, then his eyes are pierced through (graphic, but somewhat over-the-top).
  • A girl gets decapitated.
  • Several people are cut in half at once. Then a witness is decapitated.
  • Several scenes of gun shooting.
  • There is a shot of a severed head in a basket on a tricycle.
  • A young girl graphically murders several people. She is then shot multiple times by law enforcement.
  • A boy is decapitated.
  • A young girl is shown holding the severed head of a man by his hair. It is implied that she beheaded him.
  • A young girl is shot in the head.
  • A man punches a woman. She is seen with a little blood on the nose and mouth.
  • A young girl is cut in half horizontally.
  • A woman is torn in half, and we see her spine and intestines fly out. The upper half of her body, still alive, is flung through a window, and she is able to press a button before dying.
  • A man cuts his finger on a knife.
  • A diclonious is shot in the shoulder. Her vectors slow the bullet down enough so that it only inflicts a minor flesh wound, but she is knocked to the ground and her nose starts bleeding.
  • A young (5 years old) diclonious tortures another young (7 years old) diclonious by repeatedly picking her up several feet in the air with her vectors and dropping her. Although this scene contains no blood, it is very disturbing due to the sadism she shows when she does it.
  • Several SWAT team officers mysteriously show up dead at the end of a bridge. Some more SWAT officers are later graphically killed.

Profanity

  • The character name is Bando are uses strong language. (Such as 'fuck', 'shit', 'bitch' and the other.)
  • Occasional strong language in the dub. Generally little of it in the Japanese version, but it depends on the subtitles.
  • Both version contain words such as 'damn', 'hell', 'crap' ect

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A character smokes in a few scenes.
  • Syringes and liquids in tubes are seen in many of the scenes in labs. They are mainly used for medical purposes, but at times they are used to drug people.
  • There is a beach littered with what look like beer cans.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Very gory.
  • The diclonius are meant to look very creepy.
  • Ending is very emotional
  • This series is so violent adult swim refused to air it.
  • The violence, while graphic, can also be stylized and over-the-top. (Over-the-top blood sprays).
  • The series contains gory violence and frequently visceral elements.
  • At several points in the series, there are themes involving sadistic experimentation, psychological torment, animal cruelty (just one scene, actually), bullying, loneliness, suicide, and bleak, depressing thematic material.

Sex & Nudity

  • mariko humiliates nana and rips off her clothes

Violence & Gore

  • Kouta committing a mercy kill on Lucy by shooting her in the head
  • Kouta tackling Lucy while crying and begging her to stop after she kills Kanae and his father.
  • The first episode is full of violence, lots of police officers limbs are sliced and dismembered. Organs are visible and it's very disturbing
  • A young girl is dismembered: her arms and legs get ripped off one by one, after the digits on one of her hands are cut off. She survives, and wears artificial limbs afterwards.
  • There's a scene where some little boys beat a puppy to death with a vase. This is mostly offscreen- you do see swinging motions and the vase with a blood stain, and you hear the dog whimpering in pain. The dogs owner (who is a diclonious) uses her vectors to violently dismember the little boys and one girl, the aftermath is the same diclonious standing in the room with the kids blood all over the walls and floor. Extremely emotional for dog and animal lovers.
  • A girl is cut in half at the torso by another girl after being slapped by her brother. Part of one of her bones is exposed. Her father is then decapitated, and part of his spinal chord is exposed. Her brother then pounces on the offender and begins beating her.
  • A young girl's arm is blown off (not too graphic). She is later killed with her father in an explosion.
  • A young girl is shot in the back. She later dies in the hospital.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Lucy's childhood and life is very sad because humans treated her horribly for not being human
  • The message is very surreal, it revolves around humanity treating nonhumans horribly
  • When the bullies strangle Lucy and beat her dog to death, Lucy shouts "You know who isn't HUMAN!? You know who isn't HUMAN!? PEOPLE LIKE YOOOUUU!!!!!" And murders them all.
