The Take-Away Bride (2005): Dir: Vibeke Muasya / Cast: John Persson, Patricia McKenzie, Therese Glahn: Independent film about losing part of yourself only to gain another insight. Steve finally meets Lulu after a long Internet courtship and plans a camping outing for both but everything goes wrong when doubt sets in and murder makes an unsuspected appearance. Director Vibeke Muasya begins with humour with the innocence of dating, and gradually the story takes darker turns. John Persson as Steve is an honest doctor looking for romance and companionship and he plays off both the humour and emotional aspects as good as any Hollywood star. Patricia McKenzie plays Lulu who begins to understand him as their relationship takes a turn for the worse. Where the plot is headed draws them apart and then eventually back together on the common ground of horror. Supporting roles are a mixed bag of crucial particularly a victim to violence that opens a moral dilemma, as well as smaller roles that go no where. Then there is the wife of a victim who gives sound explanation that adds a new twist to the story. Nice original touches make for a grand scale dark comedy with elements of mystery and suspense. However, where it begins with humour, it gives false pretense into the film's nature. Strong theme regarding expectations in relationships and secrets we anticipate others to take away. Score: 8 ½ / 10
