The Ufc returns to Japan this weekend with another Fuel TV card and, in truth, this one is pretty freaking stacked from top to bottom. For the complete preview of the card, including Facebook prelims, fellow WhatCulture.com columnist, Mitchell Stucky, joined me on the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast (E030). Main card preview below.
Main Card Preview
Dong Hyun Kim (16-2-1, 1) vs. Siyar Bahadurzada (21-4-1), Ww: Kim is a world class grappler and judoka, which was evident in his utter dismantling of Paulo Thiago, Bjj black belt, on the ground back at Ufc: Macao. The only people to defeat Kim are Demian Maia, the best Bjj master in all of mixed martial arts, and Carlos Condit, a fighter that is surprisingly effective in his offense from the guard and extremely well rounded in all areas.
Siyar makes a great story as an Afghan fighter with tremendous power, 11 KOs.

The Ufc made history this weekend when it hosted its first ever women’s mixed martial arts match, its first ever women’s championship defense, its first ever openly gay/lesbian fighter, and its first ever female headliner. Yes, all of that in a single event that has already shattered a few records. This was not the first ever Wmma bout to be sure, but with the prestige, power, and position of the Ufc, holding a women’s fight anoints the growing movement within the sport with legitimacy and belonging.
It’s Ladies Night. Mitchell Stucky and I cover all of the action in the prelims (including a FotY candidate with Bermudez v. Grice) in part 1 of the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast and the entire main card in part 2.
Summary: The prelims saw the usual mix of exciting finishes and back-n-forth action throughout the Facebook and FX card with a few notable stinkers.

Ufc 156 started fast with the prelims and ended with the Super Fight between Aldo and Edgar. The card was loaded from top to bottom with headliners in each fight on the PPV card. The Fb and FX cards were probably the best set of prelims we’ve seen in the Ufc in years. Mitchell Stucky joins me on the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast (#023) to review all of the action.
Part 1: Prelims
Part 2: Main Card
Summary: In match-ups at the top level of talent and skill, the difference comes down not to meters or centimeters, but often millimeters. Jose Aldo had just enough speed to land first in all of the exchanges in rounds 1 and 2, particularly with his brutal leg kicks forged on the football pitch as an semi-professional player in Brazil.
The narrative changed as Aldo started to tire and Frankie’s timing adjusted to the champion’s style.

In terms of pre-fight greatness and potential, the upcoming main event on Ufc 156 could perhaps be the greatest fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s history. Reigning Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo defends his title against Frankie Edgar. It’s the #4 P4P fighter against #7.
Mitchell Stucky joins me on the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast (#022) to preview the upcoming event.
Main Card Overview
Joseph Benavidez (16-3) vs. Ian McCall (11-3-1): The first fight on the main event is a Flyweight match-up, the bridesmaids of the championship tourney that ended with Demetrious Johnson as the titleholder. Both fighters have good power with 4 KOs each and superior wrestling, but we expect Benavidez to grind out a decision victory with his superior work ethnic and dedication to the sport. “Uncle Creepy” has been far too inconsistent in his last few fights.

Ufc on Fox 6 concluded this past weekend with the first ever Ufc Flyweight title defense. Champion Demetrious Johnson (17-2-1) defended his belt against contender John Dodson (14-6) with a very close unanimous decision victory. Fellow WhatCulture.com columnist Mitchell Stucky joins me on the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast to breakdown all of the action. In part 1, we cover the Preliminary fights on Facebook and FX. In part 2, we move onto the main card … and I also pay up for losing a bet with the co-main event, a yodeling love song for infamous referee Kim Winslow. Enjoy.
Episode (021) Summary: The Fb card saw WWs David Mitchell (12-2) outpoint Simeon Thoresen (17-4-1) for his first Ufc victory. They were followed by Mw Rafael Natal (15-4-1) dominating Sean Spencer (9-2) on the ground with multiple passes, submission attempts, and even a mounted crucifix before landing a third round arm triangle choke.

The first Flyweight title defense in Ufc history is coming up this weekend on the Ufc on Fox: Johnson vs. Dodson. Demetrious Johnson (16-2-1) had a rocky road through the Flyweight tournament after a controversial majority draw in the first Semifinal with Ian McCall (11-3-1) and then a Split Decision victory over Joseph Benavidez (16-3) in the Final. Now he faces off against #1 contender, John Dodson (14-5), this Saturday in Chicago.
My co-host, fellow WhatCulture.com contributor Mitchell Stucky, and I cover the title fight and all of the action leading up in this edition of the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast.
Episode (020) Summary: Nearly all of the fighters on the prelims are coming off a loss, leaving us with one of the most lackluster undercards in recent memory. Despite that there are some big names, including Ryan Bader (14-3) facing off against Vladimir Matyushenko (26-6) and Clay Guida (29-13) vs.

A spectacular card concluded in Sao Paolo, Brazil this past weekend with the Ufc on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping. Despite a title shot looming with a win, Michael “The Count” Bisping (23-5) fell in astonishing fashion with a devastating head kick by Vitor Belfort (22-10) in the second round. This was the 15th knockout of Vitor’s illustrious and storied career.

Massaranduba has more experience and has faced better competition, making Keith’s only tactic to ground and smother the Brazilian with his freestyle wrestling.

2012 is over and what an amazing ride. The Ufc inked a paradigm-shifting, multi-year deal with Fox. They held more events, more fights, and carried a bigger roster than ever before. They anointed a new female champion Ronda Rousey (6-0). Champions returned (Gsp & Cain), legends retired (Tito, Fedor, Hughes) and the Greatest only pushed his atmospheric legacy to new heights.

The Ufc finished off 2012 in grand style as Cain Velasquez (11-1) retook his Heavyweight title from the very man that won it off of him a year ago, Junior Dos Santos (15-2). In episode 013 of the Getting Lucky Mma podcast, I am joined again by co-host Marcus Mitchell to review all the action and the low points of Ufc 155. In part 1, we review all of the prelims on the Facebook and FX undercards. On part 2, we move on to the main card.
Ufc 155 Prelim Review
Ufc 155 Main Card Review
Episode (#013) Summary
Facebook Card: The card started out with an exciting Flyweight match-up with John Moraga (12-1) taking a third round submission over #7 ranked Chris Cariaso (14-4). This certainly puts Moraga solidly into the top ten and likely puts him a fight away from being a true contender.

Working with him throughout his camp and career are the very elite of the sport, including Benson Henderson, Cain Velasquez, and Dominick Cruz. In a WhatCulture.com exclusive, Hector Lombard returns to the Getting Lucky Mma podcast to blast Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares for making excuses for his loss to the former Bellator champion.
Interview Summary: In regards to the fight, Palhares said:
During the fight, my kick was working well. But soon in the first round, one of my kicks hit Lombard’s shin below his knee. I heard a snap, and I knew something bad happened. From that moment on, I [started] feeling my foot more and more numb and without strength to walk around the octagon. It was a very complicated situation. I went through something similar in the fight against Jeremy Horn when I broke my hand during the fight.
Here is a picture of Palhares just after the fight:
But Australian favorite, Hector Lombard, has taken offense, feeling as if Toquinho is using this as an excuse to explain why he lost the fight.

In part 2 of the Getting Lucky Mma podcast Ultimate Fighter spectacular, I am joined by fellow Mma columnist, Marcus Mitchell, to break down all the action in the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. As a surprise move, Dana did not invite any of the season contestants other than the finalists to partake on the card, obviously to shake up the complacency in the housemates over lackluster performances and commitment.
The card was highlighted by Roy Nelson dominating Matt Mitrione on the feet with a beautiful uppercut. The fight was punctuated with a well-timed flurry by Big Country to turn off Meathead’s lights completely. The Tuf 16 Welterweight champion was also crowned, Us Army Ranger Colton Smith.

What an action-packed weekend. There were two Ufc events to cap two different Ultimate Fighter seasons – one on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia and the other in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes was first with the Ufc on FX: Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson. Ufc on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz is clearly the best Fox from top to bottom card thus far offered up by Joe Silva and the Ufc. To be sure, the dreaded injury bug has inevitably hit – canceling some fights and shuffling the undercard, but the matches on the main card have remained largely unaffected. Dana White can un-pucker. Barring any last minute drama, this one is going to be a winner.
Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson (#1) makes his second title defense against red hot Nate Diaz (#5) after dethroning and defending against newly christened featherweight contender, Frankie Edgar. The rest of the main card features Shogun Rua (#4) against Alexander Gustafsson (#7) , an un-retired Bj Penn against rising star Rory MacDonald, and finally injury-free Mick Swick against Matt Brown.
Don’t sleep through the under card, either. There are some really important fights in shaping the title picture for their respective division as well...
