There were definitely some surprises in last week's first Top 24 eliminations. One week, Trevor Douglas was my pick to win the whole thing. The next week? Poof. Gone. One week, it seemed like everybody hated Maddie Walker for taking Rachael Hallack's place in the Top 24. The next week? Bam! Embraced by America despite an utterly mediocre performance. On Wednesday (March 11) night, "American Idol" is unveiling our Top 12 Finalists. How will the lucky singers be revealed? And what will we do to fill the hour? Click through and follow along! 8:00 p.m. Et. I feel pretty good about Qaasim Middleton's chances of making the Top 12, so his picture is accompanying my recap. I don't know if the judges are getting Wild Card picks or what, but by hook or by crook, I'm betting on Qaasim, at least for another week. 8:02 p.m. I don't have a clue what's happening tonight.

In Shops This Week:
Curb Stomp #1
Writer: Ryan Ferrier
Artist: Devaki Neogi
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4
Description: Three gangs. Five girls. No way out. Machete Betty leads a small gang of women under the selfappointed task of protecting their home of Old Beach, one of three boroughs surrounding a rich metropolitan city. When Betty takes the life of a rival gang member in an act of self-defense, she sets off a chain reaction of retaliation, gang warfare, and unlikely allies.
Our Take: As much as I wanted this to be a mix of Switchblade Sisters and The Warriors, it doesn’t have the delirious absurdity of the latter or the delicious trashiness of the former. But, like The Warriors, it retains the brazen violence of that cult classic while subtly investing the protagonists with the kind of relative depth that elevated Switchblade Sisters above pure sleaze. Absolutely worth your time if you love crime drama,...

If Charles Band were a pro wrestler, I’d like to think his entrance music would be Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”. Four new little beasties will be added to his repertoire when Unlucky Charms begins filming any moment now.

*here be spoilers. Director: Rupert Bryan. Writers: Rupert Bryan and Ben Loyd-Holmes. Cast: Tamer Hassan, Barbara Nedeljakova, Ben Loyd-Holmes, Zara Phythian, Daniel Caren, Dominic Le Moignan, Jemma Bolt, Lisa-Marie Long, and Shauna Macdonald. There have been many films developed in the rape revenge genre. From I Spit on Your Grave (1978) to Irreversible, there are issues of violence and power shown in this style of film. Rupert Bryan's The Hike is much less violent than the films mentioned here. The villains seem more content with fondling a group of female hikers rather than acting out their dark desires. Thus, The Hike begins as a tepid rape revenge thriller that transitions into a standard horror feature with the ending and music two of only a few quality film elements. Five girls, Torri (Barbara Nedeljakova), Kate (Zara Phythian), Charlie (Jemma Bolt), Ellie (Lisa-Marie Long) and Leanne (Stephanie Siadatan), head out on a camping trip to escape their.

Poor, poor Saturdays. Despite being pretty much the only girl-group still standing in the Wilds of Pop for years now (Parade? Girls Can’t Catch? Soundgirl? Nah, didn’t think so), they just can’t seem to catch a break. Things were looking so good when All Fired Up exploded out in a daze of heads-to-speakers-which-resulted-in-blowing-minds and calls that ‘we’re all animal’ (bagsy being an Emperor Tamarin – for the little monkey master beard obviously), storming to number three in the charts and eventually becoming one of their best selling singles. So why oh why did they not release the album On Your Radar, which is even a hook in All Fired Up for goodness sake, after that instead of waiting until the dodgy post-christmas market to release a mid-tempo ballad. A ballad. Seriously girls you’re in a girlband – dancing and singing about dancing is totally your shtick.

Chicago – For a brief shining moment, it looked like the cast of 1999’s “American Pie” would be the break-out stars of the new millenium. Sadly, 13 years have passed and most of them haven’t fulfilled on their potential with a few never topping that first film, which is still a sweet, raunchy, comedy classic. Therefore, I’m sure most of the “Pie” kids were ecstatic that a fourth film, “American Reunion,” finally got off the ground, to be released on April 2nd, 2012. Before you catch up with them in a theater, catch up at home with the release of the first three films — the great “American Pie,” the decent “American Pie 2,” and the pretty-bad “American Wedding.”
American Pie

All three films have been given lavish treatment as Universal clearly thinks that the new movie is going to reignite interest in them either in a nostalgic generation or a new one.

They wasted no time getting right down to it tonight on “American Idol” as the show set up shop on a newly designed stage for its first live show of the season. Tonight, 12 guys, plus one yet to be named 13th, took the stage all hoping America votes their way. It’s going to be a tough decision for voters if they were looking to the judges for some direction as everyone got gushing reviews from Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler post-song.

Last year, to much hype about the future of film festivals bringing films into people’s homes over the Internet, the Sundance Film Festival launched Next, a curated series of 8 “innovative” and “low-budget” films that also played on YouTube — for a price — for the duration of the fest.
As an innovative program, Next proved to be largely disappointing — to the indie film industry anyway, not to the filmmakers themselves. Getting into Sundance is a cachet for any filmmaker in and of itself, so that was bonus for these films. However, during the fest at the time, many film bloggers and writers complained that the Next films were impossible to find on YouTube. Plus, the entire program didn’t end up turning the industry or the current film festival paradigm on its ear, and financially it sounded like it was all a big bust.

Sundance's lineup of films selected to screen at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival (January 20-30 in Park City, Utah) are not sucky this year as they include two awesome docs about women in media, one lesbian space alien adventure directed by Madeliene Olnek, a dark western by Kelly Reichardt, and two thrillers by chicks (I can say 'chicks' because of third wave feminism, apparently) plus some of our favorite male genre directors defy gender stereotypes and film convention with their brave new films.
Sundance, the super-over-hyped and most pretentious of all film festivals in the United States, occasionally has a moment of clarity and recognizes the value of some of the brand new movies made by intelligent, funny, and interesting women. After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.
Here is the full list:

Following yesterday's announcement of the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the second part of their lineup, which includes the more starry-eyed Premieres section, the best-of-fests Spotlight section, the sure-to-be-culty Park City at Midnight section, the low-budget Next section, and the more experimental New Frontier section (an extension of New Frontier Program, the collection of video art installations which has already been noted here for playing James Franco's dramatic multimedia examination of "Three's Company.")
In addition to the return of filmmakers like "Chuck & Buck"'s Miguel Arteta, "Clockwatchers" director Jill Sprecher, Kevin Smith and "The Station Agent"'s Thomas McCarthy to Park City, the festival will also welcome less frequent or first-time Sundance attendees such as Hollywood types Al Pacino ("Son of No One") and Tobey Maguire ("The Details") and mumblecore alums Joe Swanberg ("Uncle Kent," which announced it's been...

Well, yesterday, we saw the full list of films in-competition; today, we get to see those titles that have been selected for Sundance 2011′s out-of-competition lineup.
And as I said with yesterday’s post, I’ll be going over the complete list, highlighting titles that need to be, taking into consideration this blog’s specific interests. The only title that immediately stands out is Brit John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses, which MsWOO positively reviewed, after seeing it at the London Film Festival in October. Read her review Here.
But look for future posts profiling any other titles I deem worthy. I’ve applied for press credentials to attend next year’s festival. I won’t know until the 23rd of this month, whether I’ve been granted press access or not. If I am, I will attend the festival; and if I’m not, well, I probably won’t.

Well, if the Competition titles at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival don't generate any early year Oscar buzz, I think it's safe to say the Out of Competition titles will. Several films that have already been seen and positively reviewed can be found in the fest's Spotlight Line-Up along with a batch of anticipated hopefuls in the Premiere Section.
Beginning with the festival's premieres, Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt) is bringing Cedar Rapids to Park City where it will debut before it hits theaters only a couple weeks later on February 11. Wednesday, the 2011 Sundance Film Festival announced the 58 films in four categories [1] that would be eligible for awards. Today, they've announced the next slice of their line up - 57 out of competition films in the Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. This is generally where you get many of the bigger name projects and this year is no exception. We already knew [2] that Kevin Smith's Red State would be on the list, but there's also Tom McCarthy's new film Win Win, Morgan Spurlock's documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, the highly buzzed-about Submarine, Fantastic Fest darling I Saw the Devil as well as Hobo With a Shotgun and a whole bunch more including films with Al Pacino, Tobey Maguire, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Paul Rudd and others. As we said yesterday, the announcement of the movies playing the 2011 Sundance Film Festival is like looking into our film futures.

Yesterday we revealed the in-competition line-up for this years Sundance Film Festival. Today the programmers have announced the second wave, the out-of-competition line-up. It includes six categories and you can check them all out below. We already knew Kevin Smith‘s Red State would be screening, as he announced on his podcast last night. The rest of this out-of-competition line-up is pretty unbelievable.
We get Cedar Rapids (from Youth In Revolt‘s Miguel Arteta), Mark Pellington‘s I Melt With You, My Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd, Tom McCarthy‘s Win Win, as well as Dito Montiel‘s third feature The Son of No One. We also have new documentaries by Morgan Spurlock and Eugene Jarecki. Some of my favorite Tiff films are also making an appearance, including Submarine (pictured above) and Meek’s Cutoff. The book Fashion Etcetera by Sam Haskins and accessories. By Larry Baglio/starpix.com. A week after supplying the closing act of New York’s spring 2010 runway shows, Tommy Hilfiger is having a bit of a moment. With his new global flagship on Fifth Avenue up and running and a breezy SoCal collection for spring under his belt, the mega-designer is riding his typically Tommy wave of optimism; let’s say, a fresh curl in the fashion world’s otherwise stagnant sea. So much so, the designer has now sponsored a limited-edition photo book of the reclusive and, until very recently, fashion-phobic photographer Sam Haskins. Oprah Winfrey has spoken out against shamed singer Chris Brown for a second time, after the star slammed the TV titan for siding with ex-girlfriend Rihanna following their now notorious bust-up.
After Brown's beating of Rihanna in February, for which he was sentenced to five years probation last month, Winfrey dedicated an episode of her hit daytime talkshow to the topic of domestic abuse.
At the time, the Umbrella beauty was reported to be back in the arms of Brown - which Winfrey advised her against on air.
After the footage was shown on U.S. TV, Brown hit out at Winfrey for lending support to Rihanna, insisting he had helped the media mogul out in the past.
He said, "I commend Oprah on being like, 'This (abuse) is a problem', but it was a slap in my face. I did a lot of stuff for her, like going to Africa and performing for her school. She could have been more helpful, like, 'Ok, I'm going to help both of these people out.'"
Winfrey initially replied with a stern statement through her spokesperson, saying, "Oprah is very appreciative that Chris Brown performed at her school but she takes domestic abuse very seriously. She hopes he gets the counselling he needs."
Now, the powerful star has backed up her decision not to defend Brown, insisting that although she was grateful for his help during the opening of her African girls school, she does not condone domestic violence in any way.
She tells Access Hollywood, "So this is what happened; Chris Brown did my show several years ago, I think it was 2007. Fun, fun time and afterward he said, ‘If there’s anything ever I can do for you then let me know.' I almost never take anybody up on that... But my girls at the Academy in Africa love Chris Brown, love, love, love, love, love Chris Brown.
"He said he would go and I had him and his whole team come over and they performed for my girls at the Academy and it was so fantastic. Five girls fainted... needed oxygen from the nurses… The next day they taught a hip-hop dance class, it was all really great... we all hugged and thanked (him) and all that, and gave a small honorarium because that’s what the school could afford... and all was well.
"I’m still very happy that he came to the school, still very happy about that. (They are) two separate issues. So when Chris Brown issued a statement saying that he felt that I, because he had come to my school I should have, you know, been defending him... They’re two separate issues. I really am grateful that he came to the school. (But) domestic violence is something that I wouldn’t tolerate. Period."...
