Bows And Arrows, Hearts And Matadors

Warning: Spoilers
Pete Malloy shows up at Jim Reeds house driving a brand new 1974 AMC Matador Coupe. It is one of the most hideously ugly automobiles to ever disgrace the roads of America. Why would he trade his gorgeous Ford Mustang for this thing? Not five minutes into the episode, the car is damaged in a hit and run. The damage makes the car look better.

Malloy and Reed get to look super-cool chasing down a purse snatcher while wearing their street clothes. Actually, it's obvious that it's two stunt doubles doing the chasing. Kent McCord's double is quite hefty while Martin Milner's double runs in a rather bizarre manner. We've seen Malloy run before. His body never moved the way this double's body moves. But the partners do look cool, like undercover cops with guns and handcuffs, as they take out the garbage - from the dumpster he's hiding in.

The show plays true to life when M & R meet with a young woman who's boyfriend has been using her as target practice. For his bow and arrow! Luckily he's a bad aim. The woman declares herself done with the bum and has tossed all his belongings out the door. It's time for her to move on and meet someone better. Truth of such matters enters in when, after the partners locate and arrest the lousy, stinking bum, the woman shows up at the Station House to bail him out. Sad.

Even more sad is a storyline in which Adam-12 responds to a robbery at a deli. The elderly owner is in turmoil from the ordeal. He collapses and Malloy and Reed perform resusitation on him until an ambulance arrives. At the hospital, the man's wife thanks the partners for doing their best to save her husband's life. The man has unfortunately died from a trauma-induced heart attack. In a matter of mere minutes, the writer and director of the episode and the performers successfully make this a terribly heart wrenching scene.

There's some comedy tossed in regarding Pete's damaged car. Sergeant MacDonald suggests Malloy take the car to MacDonald's kid-brother's automotive repair shop. The shop though, is located in Beverly Hills. Malloy is certain the location means there will be a very high price to pay for the repairs. It's interesting seeing this side of Malloy - untrusting of his Police Sergeant's kin and trying to get around having to take it to a "ritzy" fix-it shop.

Another matter has Malloy and Reed investigating a store burglary in progress. This features a surprising action stunt and a shoot-out in which Reed almost buys it during a foot chase. He rounds a corner and is met by a hailstorm of bullets. (Luckily, the bad-guy has the aim of a "Star Wars" Stormtrooper. All those bullets miss their target.) Cool action scene followed by a pretty good track-down of the suspect who has left puddles of blood at the scene when Malloy and Reed returned fire.

Another great episode of Adam-12.

Pete's Car Gets Damaged

Opportunity to see our heroes off duty. They're back in uniform quick enough after a good chase scene. Entertaining conversation about fixing Martin Milner's car. Kent McCord feels partially responsible for damage. Reminder the duo has life outside of police work. Looks like Emergency episode in one story.

Uncompromising Quality

(*Officer Malloy quote*) - "Win a few. Lose a few."

While driving to work Malloy's brand new car is damaged when he and Reed go chasing, on foot, after a purse snatcher.

From dealing with a domestic dispute, to a convenience store hold-up, to a pharmacy robbery - It's turning out to be a very busy shift for the guys from Adam-12.
