Did LAPD officers take service revolvers home?
giftgoose3 March 2020
In episode 6 of season 2 (A Sound Like Thunder) both Reed and Malloy have their service revolvers with them when on their day off. If I recall correctly there is even mention that they were fortunate this was now LAPD policy. So, contrary to the review by "strong-122-478885", it would appear that Reed having his service revolver after finishing work is a valid plot mechanism. Perhaps the confusion arises because revolvers are often shown being locked in a wall box at the police station before suspects are taken into a secure room for processing.

One thing I did find interesting was the technology used in 1973 for checking vehicle number plate information. I also note that this episode has Shaaron Claridge who played the role of the police radio dispatcher throughout the shows run. Apparently her main job was as an actual LAPD radio dispatcher and she was hired to perform that role for the show. No wonder she has that sound of authenticity.

Considering that grocer actually tried to blame Reed for shooting an unarmed man - something he did not do - I sure hope Reed never patronized that grocery store ever again. In fact, I hope that store went out of business.

This is definitely a noteworthy episode in that we get to see Sharon - the dispatcher we always hear on the police radio - for the one and only time in series.

Another interesting tidbit in this episode is the guy who gets shot. The actor's name is Jay Hammer. Mr. Hammer would go on to play " Fletcher Reade" on the soap opera Guiding Light for many years in the 1980's.

I loved how we see Malloy getting fed up with his temporary partner, "Steve Tyson". What a pain that guy was.

(*Officer Reed quote*) - "Double or nothing?"

This episode starts off with Officers Reed and Malloy practicing at the shooting range.

While off duty (later that evening) Reed is held up outside the Rancho Market. There are shots fired and the culprit takes off in a green VW (circa 1963).

In the meantime, Reed's side of the story is investigated by the police board.

While Reed is assigned to desk duty, Malloy does some extensive research to help clear his partner.

The Non-Stop Search For A Green VW

Not being a cop, myself, I really can't say what's what.

But, what I do know is that in every other episode of Adam-12, I've seen (at the end of their shift) Reed and Malloy (as well as the cops) lock up their guns at the police station and then they went home to civilian life.

Yet, in this one episode Reed didn't do this. And, so - Wouldn't you know it - Reed (in civilian dress) suddenly finds himself in a lethal situation (arms full of groceries) where he must draw this weapon (concealed under his jacket) in order to save his own skin.

And, as you can well-guess - The confrontation that entails is like pure police crap hitting the fan of truth, justice, and the American way.

Anyway - This whole business I just described is simply more inaccurate nonsense about the whole operating procedures of the LAPD.
