When Siegfried takes leave of Crawford at Skeldale House, he tells Crawford he will see his 'mare' the next day. But in the next scene, when he's examining the horse, he keeps calling the horse 'he.' Mares are female.
After Captain Crawford's visit to Skeldale, Siegfried says he is going to treat the captain's mare. At the captain's house Siegfried treats a light bay horse displaying no clear evidence of being a stallion but which Siegreid refers to as "he". On departing, Siegried tells the captain that he will return to look again at the gelding, so the horse treated was not a mare.
Just before Siegfried's second visit, Captain Crawford is riding a dark bay horse which he implies is called Tess and refers to the light bay as Trojan. On Siegried's arrival he refers to the captain's dark bay horse as a mare.
