A poignant tale
skard4220 February 2021
This was a beautiful and poignant episode. It'd take any viewer with a heart on a emotional roller-coaster. That anyone could consider this even remotely anti-Christian, as the sole other reviewer did, is beyond ludicrous, just because it shows some people wrestling with their faith in the face of tragedy. Who wouldn't in their shoes? It actually has a serious pro-Christianity bias, given that there is an implicit assumption that if there is a deity at all, it's the one of the three Abrahamic faiths, and that the Christian church is the best representative of those three. And, while it's human to ask, "is there a god" in circumstances like those shown in this episode, the writers clearly lean towards the answer of yes.

There could be some fair criticism, arguably the episode was a bit maudlin and overly dramatic, I don't think so, but I could see someone thinking that. The actual trial represented, while it had its moments, was less interesting than most of the trials shown in other episodes, that wasn't a great subplot, which is why I rated it 9. Plus, it seemed like in that trial, the defense's closing arguments were first, which isn't how it normally goes (although it wouldn't strictly count as a goof, since possibly they simply didn't show the first closing argument, and when the ADA speaks, it could be the allowable rebuttal, not the actual closing argument). But only someone who was incredibly insecure about their religious beliefs, and couldn't stand to see anyone questioning their faith even under the toughest circumstances, could see even the slightest hint of anti-Christianity in this episode.

It's one of the best episodes, obviously.

It has good drama (that part with the ghost kid, was a bit too much, though) and some really funny moments. And a good soundtrack, obviously. I don't see the anti-Christian message either. But I guess that's why so many shows lack courage these days... The fact and reasons the dying kid gave to sue « God » were fairly understandable. And it's a good thing the church acknowledged that. The case about temporary insanity made sense too, and it was a joy to see Fish and Cage clowning in court. Too bad Renee was given the shortest end of the stick, again. With that ridiculous and lazy closing. One episode after her best friend was brilliant and won her case with it. Ling's antics and seeing her overwhelmed by the boy's passing. In her own way, of course. Were my own favorite parts. Nelle and her ridiculous raccoon eyes, was a nice touch. However, I really don't see the point in Georgia in the show anymore...

Change of pace

For once, Ally and her pathetic man problems aren't the focus of this episode, which is what makes it so great to watch. Everyone outperforms themselves here, from Fish and Cage in court with their bells and whistles (IYKYK) to Ally and Ling suing a church because they won't fund a dying kid.

As always, Haley Joel Osment dominates the screen and is a joy to watch. Even Lucy Liu's Ling reveals a side we haven't seen, showing a depth of character previously missing.

Nelle's eye makeup... well, it wouldn't be Ally McBeal without some sort of nonsense.

In all, a great episode which shows off the talented cast and writers in ways not seen previously in this series. If you're at the point where the endless anti-feminist Ally is getting on your nerves, this ep will restore your faith.

Insight into character development

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the most touching episodes not just because of Ally/Eric's storyline but because we get some insight into a different side of both Ally and Ling. This was the kindest and most compassionate I've ever seen Ally bestow on anyone. We see Ling's hard exterior is just a front as she grieves in her own way. As if that wasn't enough she shows her compassionate side towards Ally by hiring the blimp to remind Ally there is a God.

Horrible

Except the choice of the song Vincent. This is verging on anti-Christianity.
