Third season premier episode that's simply hilarious, and one all us long time fans remember so well. Only debit, it's in black and white.
Mr. Drysdale buys a movie studio, called Mammoth Pictures, as an investment for the Clampetts and everything goes haywire. Right off the bat, Jed is crowned movie producer and let the games begin.
Actually, not a bad look at behind the scenes Hollywood in a wacky sort of way. Note, there are some memorable character actors in this episode to put it over the top.
Best of the Best is a wild takeoff on DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, the homicidal Mr. Hyde played by veteran actor John Abbott. Abbott's character is called Sir Trevor Gielgud-Burton-Guiness? Ellie May is cast as one of Hyde's pretty victims -- and she throws Sir Trevor right out a window! Another reminder that Ellie was blessed with incredible strength.
Look for Alvy Moore (from GREEN ACRES) as Alvin, also popular character actor Milton Frome (from SUPERMAN) as frustrated studio executive Mr. Chapman.
Interestingly, there's a "black and white" promo for the famous Rock Hudson/Doris Day comedy, SEND ME NO FLOWERS. Since the series was the Number One tv show at the time, it made good sense, and may have inspired the producers to start thinking about COLOR episodes!
By the way, there are some nice shots of the Clampett's old car racing around Hollywood. The historic buggy was later put on display (after the series ended) at the Ralph Foster Museum in Missouri.
SEASON 3 EPISODE 1 remastered CBS dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released 2009.
