Religious noir
lor_20 January 2024
Since he was Jesus on screen only a few years earlier, Jeffrey Hunter is fine casting as a hardened criminal in a latter-day film noir with strong religious overtones. There's a fatalism about the story (no degrees of freedom for the characters) that is not my cup of tea, but it plays out well.

Sally Kellerman is perhaps the central casting as a truly dedicated nun who runs a tiny post office branch at her church, making it a soft target for theft. Fresh out of prison, Hunter cases the place and he's beholden to a gangster so he becomes dedicated to setting up a heist. Fly in the ointment is Nun Kellerman, who is so friendly and wholesome that he's torn about what he should do.

Darren McGavin is solid as the detective on the case, who like Kellerman, is dedicated to his own philosophy, and ends up with a pyrrhic victory. There's very little suspense, but the underlying moral issues make for a thought-provoking drama.
