- Jason sets out to help an Indian friend, Red Hand, escape death by an a Major filled with hate. He sets out to help Red Hand prove he is a human, with a judge's help; but the Major's hate stands in his way.
- In the voice of Jason McCord:
There was a Calvary out looking for an Indian by the name of Red Hand. He had left his reservation at Mescalero, and wounded a U.S. Calvary officer doing it. Red Hand was hiding out with his wife, Snow Child, and their infant son. Major Lynch was taking a hard-nosed approach. He wanted Red Hand killed. He didnt care about the woman and child they would be better off as well.
I came to talk to the Major. I told him that killing Red Hand would be a bad mistake. The Apaches would go on the war path, and it would be a massacre. The Indians would undoubtedly win. He demanded to know who I was. The moment I told him, I knew he had heard of me. But I stood my ground and told him I wanted to talk to Red Hand. At one point, Red Hand and I were friends. I could talk to him and try to get him to surrender. The Major allowed me to go find him on my terms.
When Red Hand heard me coming, he attacked me, but stopped fighting when he realized it was me. I told him the Calvary had sent me. They werent going to allow him to go back to the reservation, but they were willing to work with him. Red Hand told me why he left the reservation they were mistreated and fed disgusting food. I told him to talk to the government and they would listen because they were afraid of him. He needed to tell the government what it was like in the Reservation. They may even allow him to keep his respect. He agreed to go.
The Major had given me his word that hed let it happen that way. But as soon as we met up with him, he arrested Red Hand. I fought him. Oh, I was so mad! He had given me his word, but he said there was no word as far as an Indian was concerned! Red Hand tried to fight his way to freedom, but the grabbed him, forced him on his horse, and rode away. I had been punched pretty hard. It took me a minute to come around.
Back at the hotel, I ran into a friend, Judge Markham. He figured out that I had butted heads with the army concerning Red Hand. We went to the hotel room to talk. I told him every person had a right to a trial, and he informed me Red Hand wasnt considered a person. Red Hand would have to prove he was a person in order to be freed. Id have to find a way to get him to argue that fact in trial.
I went and asked the Major if hed transport the Indian for trial. He laughed at me and refused to do it. He didnt think an Indian needed to stand trial. I then warned him that Red Hand better make is safely back to Mescalero for trial.
Unfortunately, Red Hand couldnt wait any longer. He was desperate and broke jail. I was afraid the Major would try and shoot him down. My fear came true, but Red Hands death wasnt in vain. His wife cried, and I used her tear to prove that Indians were indeed humans. The judge declared this even could change the future for all Indians. It took the Majors hate to make that happen.
