Basil Rathbone was not only an esteemed actor and accomplished swordsman, but also a hero of the British Army in World War One having won the Military Cross, the 2nd highest (at the time) award a British Army Officer could receive, just below the Victoria Cross. He performed perilous daytime reconnaissance missions in 'No Man's Land'.
