In recent years, Carol Burnett has revealed that the idea for her starting off each show with a question-and-answer session with the studio audience came from the series' first executive producer, Bob Banner, based on Garry Moore's doing audience warm-ups himself (as opposed to a professional warm-up artist or stand-in) prior to the taping of each edition of The Garry Moore Show (1958), which Banner had also produced. Like Jim Nabors' annual season-premiere guest appearances, the opening audience question-and-answer segments became a permanent part of the show.
