This episode was John Hawkesworth's last contribution to the series as internal reorganisations at Granada TV had made his role obsolete.
The final scene of the episode was shot in the gardens of Arley Hall, a country house in the village of Arley, Cheshire. The house is a Grade II listed building and the formal gardens also listed at Grade II on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
Boscombe Valley is not an actual location although Holmes describes it as near Ross in the Herefordshire District. This production has it set in Cheshire, a county north of Herefordshire, and Holmes and Watson are shown taking a brougham lettered for the London and North Western Railway to the station. This is correct as both locations are served by the West Coast Main Line of the LNWR, later merged into British Railways.
