"Ed Talks to God" earned the ignominious distinction of being the final episode for Freddie Prinze, who tragically took his own life mere hours after shooting was concluded. A surprise birthday party for Ed finds more cancellations than guests, but the timely arrival of B.J. Foster (Edward Andrews), former private first class in Ed's battalion during the war, is a definite surprise, if only because he read two years before that his buddy 'Blinky' Foster has died: "I read that too but I didn't believe it!" He's taking an aluminum leg for 'a little test hobble,' out in Los Angeles to visit his in-laws: "they haven't met my leg yet!" Ed's habit of speaking to the sky puzzles Blinky, who admits that he's cheerful, not happy: "there's a difference!" Chico convinces Blinky to impersonate God, in order to talk back to Ed: "even Rich Little doesn't imitate God!" Virtually our final look at Freddie Prinze sees him wearing a face full of cake, and not looking amused.
