The main character repeatedly uses the term "shiksa" to refer to his secret girlfriend. The term "shiksa", sometimes considered pejorative, is a Hebrew term used to describe a non-Jewish girl or woman, a gentile. In some Jewish-American communities, it is considered extremely inappropriate for a Jewish boy or man to be romantically involved with or to marry a "shiksa"; doing so can cause one to be disowned, ostracized and bullied within the community, although this attitude has changed a great deal in modern times.
