Interesting character evolution

Warning: Spoilers
If you are a fan of the series, this is an interesting episode to see because in this one we begin to see Frank in a much different light.

When the bitter son of a man who was murdered many years before comes to collect the few remaining personal effects, Frank sees a medal which peaks his curiosity. It turns out to be a Victoria Cross awarded for heroism at the invasion of Normandy and to Frank it seems inconceivable that a man who was a Canadian war hero should be beaten to death in Hastings area and his case allowed to go unsolved. Frank then forsakes and reassigns his workload to delve into the cold case with a vengeance.

It comes as no surprise when with his usual doggedness he searches old files for similar cases and eventually finds the offending youth; the young man is in a wheelchair after suffering some sort of spinal injury. Frank decides not to take him in for the murder, and we are lead to assume that it is because he has already suffered enough.

This emerging sensitive side of Frank just first became evident when his son came to visit and exhibited signs of confusion regarding he sexuality and Frank treats him with a surprising gentleness and support. I have enjoyed seeing the evolution of his character and think the new side of the man is very good to see and also much easier to like, but I hope he keeps some of the edginess which makes him so fun.

The Ali character is also going through her own issues after the suicide of the youth she arrested and sent to jail. This results in her search for some salvation through Big Sisters creates an interesting side story.

All in all a good episode with some softening and morphing of the leads, and worth following.
