Around 1849, thousands of miners subscribed to Alexander Todd's mail delivery service. He bought a rowboat to haul more mail, and charged miners $16 for transportation from one gold field area to another; the miners also had to row the boat. After he expanded his business to include delivering gold dust to banks in San Francisco, he was making $1000 (nearly $33,000 in 2018) a day at a time when miners might make $100 a week.
