- Fred wants to ask his boss for a raise and Barney has an idea to get it. However, instead of getting a raise, Fred gets fired.
- With a baby on the way, Fred needs a raise in his salary, but Mr. Slate can see it coming and is determined not to give one. First, when Fred waits outside his office for him, Slate's son plays an employee asking for a raise and getting fired, only to agree to come back to work for him with a pay cut. This initially dissuades Fred, so he comes up with an idea of having Barney pose as a millionaire who wants to hire Fred away as a way to get a counteroffer from Slate. Instead, Slate tells Barney, "You can have him." and fires Fred. Now Fred is out job hunting. First, he gets a job as a short order cook at a drive-in, which doesn't seem so bad at first until workers at a nearby job site let out for lunch all at once. Suddenly, the workload is too much for him and he runs screaming from the place. His second job as a gas station attendant ends quickly when he forgets to get payment from his first (and last) customer. His next job sees him get dressed up in a bird costume and is able to actually fly. Slate sees him, and realizing how desperate he is to provide for his new family, has a change of heart and woos him back to the quarry with the pay bump he was looking for.—jlentzphx@gmail.com
