"A Place to Die" guest stars Arnold Johnson as Hubert Johnson, an elderly stranger who knocks on the Evans family door and requests shelter for his imminent demise. It was Michael who befriended him at the rest home, inspiring him to be with them when the end comes, even renting a bed so that they won't have to give up one of theirs. Only Florida tries to hold out, Michael convincing her that he'll only be around for a couple of days before returning to the rest home. JJ figures he'll never survive Thelma's oatmeal: "one lump or two?" The New Year's celebration finds Willona preaching the Gospel according to Hubert, and the old man expires exactly as he wanted. Arnold Johnson was a youthful 54 at the time, while John Amos is absent for this episode, James said to be away on a job.
