- Thelma asks her parents about her relatives as she has to write up the family tree for a school project. James says his father is dead, but Thelma finds out he is alive. Thelma invites him to visit, but James is not happy to see his father.—Bernie
- Thelma comes home with some great news -- or so she thinks. She's located James' dad, who works on a ship. This is confusing to Florida, who had been told by James that his father passed away years ago. Thelma says that she has invited her grandfather to dinner. When James comes home from work, and Thelma tells him of his discovery, he yells that he never wants to see his father.
James retreats to his room. Meanwhile, his dad shows up to the apartment, and JJ, Thelma and Michael stall, as they try to come up with an excuse as to why James won't come out of his room. Florida goes to James and gets the real story: his father abondoned his mom and siblings years ago. James has never been able to forgive him.
James' dad catches on that his son doesn't want to see him, but Florida begs him to talk to James. He explains to James that the poverty the family faced back then was so hard, that he felt it the family would have survived better if he left. James points out that no matter how hard it got, he never considered leaving Florida and the kids. It looks as if the men are not going to resolve the issue, and James' dad turns to go.
James' dad thanks Florida and the kids for inviting him over. He is very happy to have met them. James comes out of his bedroom and tells he dad he can stay. He gives him a bear hug and cries, indicating his forgiveness of him.
