Judge Stanton, who, at the series beginning, let Nick off with community service, is promoted to federal judge, but a heart attack soon kills him. Nick cares for Stanton's dog, whom Nick found wandering the street outside of the judge's house. Burton tells Nick that he's getting too old for the hectic lawyer's pace and considers joining the judicial bench. Alvin defends adolescent Ted Popper, whose parental abuse caused his internal voices and subsequent violence, which make him unsuitable for youth shelters. Fondly remembering their political campaigning pasts, Alvin and Laurie Solt start a movement for suitable psychiatric care. Nick takes the case of Janine McGregor, who needs to cash in her missing daughter Grace's trust fund by having her declared legally dead in order to keep her home in case the daughter returns. A young woman claims to be Grace.
