With this episode, Jimmy Demaret became the first celebrity guest star to appear as himself on the show.
As Ricky and Fred look up a rule in their golfing book, Lucy and Ethel drop the bombshell that they are going to learn the game, too. Ricky slams the book closed on Fred's finger. The book cover, seen on screen, identifies it as Jimmy Demaret's book, "My Partner, Ben Hogan" (New York: McGraw Hill, 1954).
Jimmy Demaret would go on to guest star in an episode of The Lucy Show (1962) with Lucille Ball and her second husband, Gary Morton
When Lucy asks which golf club to use, Ricky suggests she use a "stymie", while Fred suggests using a "niblick"; Lucy laughingly accuses Fred of making the term up. In fact, neither term is made up and both are related to golf, though neither were actively used at the time. A niblick is an obsolete golf club that was used in the early 20th century. A stymie was an obsolete rule that referred to when one player's ball blocked another, and it wasn't a golf club at all.
In the opening scene, Ethel is reading the February 15, 1954 issue of "Time".
