With typical French class and charm, Maurice Chevalier humbly apologizes to Jack Benny's wife, after breaking in effusive greeting of a French woman, in their own language. The wife had been sitting at the table, in the French restaurant in France, where said exchange took place. This is in sheer contrast to the wife's uncouthness of a few scenes prior, when---while in Paris---she had loudly addressed a Frenchman in English without so much as offering him an apology first, neither in French nor English.
Showcases the notorious arrogance of American tourists who visit France, but can't be bothered to buy a simple phrasebook before leaving, if only to learn how to say: "I am sorry, I do not speak French". Jack Benny's wife starts rudely addressing a French clerk in English---and expecting to be understood---without so much as offering an apology for her lack of French. She was about to speak the same words in English, only louder, when Jack stopped her. This is behind the notorious American Francophobia, so prevalent across the USA, even in 2021. Then they project, and claim the French are rude, without looking at the three fingers which are pointing their right back at them.
