Should Have Been Better

Dan Duryea and Jack Benny-- it's hard to think of two more dissimilar types. The comedic possibilities seem endless, and while their lunchcounter skit is mildly funny, the material is not first-rate. Duryea gets to do some of his tough guy, but doesn't project his trademark brand of snarling mean. In my book, the funniest part is the opening with Verna Felton as Dennis Day's tough-talking mom. She's a hoot as she demands the star's dressingroom for her son, and not even Duryea is going to stand in her way. Watch for the great Frank Nelson's surprise bit part. The Benny show was so good at putting together Jack's supporting cast. A good show but not among his best.
