Robert or Roberta?
ShadeGrenade4 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Robert, a young orphan, lives in the country with his puritanical Aunt, Belle Weston. She treats him as though he were a girl. He is kept away from school, made to wear Shirley Temple-type clothes, forced to play with dolls, and referred to at all times as 'Roberta'. Whenever he misbehaves, he receives harsh punishment.

Drake, an American, gets a job in the Weston house as handyman, and is appalled at Belle's inhuman treatment of the child. But he dare not tell the police as she threatens to notify the authorities that his work permit has expired.

After making off with a valuable bracelet, Drake decides to blow the whistle on Belle...

Based on a story by Charles Beaumont, this is a startling allegory of human sexuality. The boy is being forced to lead an unnatural life by pretending to be something he is not, and his protests fall on deaf ears. Given that this was made only two years or so after homosexuality was legalised in Britain, I'm sure it struck a chord with some viewers.

George Maharis, who plays 'Drake', would have been familiar to television audiences from 'Route 66'. Barbara Jefford is outstanding as the nutty-as-a-fruitcake 'Belle', as is Kim Burfield as the tormented child. Adrienne Posta, cast as the unnamed girl whom Drake beds, was 'Rita' in the 1971 film 'The Alf Garnett Saga'.

Freaked me out as child.

Warning: Spoilers
Remember being quite disturbed after watching this. Images of a boy in a dress being walked on a dog leash haunts me to this day.

Strong Episode Despite The Lack Of Supernatural Elements
Theo Robertson25 August 2011
Drake is an American drifter resident in England . He finds work at the home of Miss Weston who is guardian to her niece Roberta but is Roberta all she seems ?

You can't help noticing that this series is split in to two types of story . One is a generic murder type mystery while the other is a supernatural type story . You'll can't fail to notice that the supernatural episodes are much stronger than the murder ones . Miss Belle is the exception to the rule, there's no ghostly shenanigans instead we have a psychological thriller where sexual repression and the damages it causes is at the heart of the subtext

What makes the episode work so well is the casting . George Maharis as Drake is stereotypical American beefcake with a mannerism straight out of the Clint Eastwood school of acting . He could have easily been a one dimensional character but his performance lights up the screen . Likewise Belle Weston could have been equally clichéd but Barbara Jefford manages to make her her character so much more than a hammy repressed lesbian . I'll say no more about the story since I don't want to ruin it but it's a great episode on which to end the series

Over all JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN was a great show. It did have a fair amount of clangers but these are quickly forgotten after seeing the stand out episodes such as Girl Of My Dreams , Eve and this one

Average closer
Leofwine_draca22 November 2022
MISS BELLE is a distinctly average conclusion to the JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN TV series, offering psychological thrills rather than a supernatural angle as in some of the episodes. This one has a drifter turning up at the home of an aunt and her niece, except everyone's hiding dark secrets that eventually come to the fore. This one struggles with sympathetic characters - the kid aside - although the gender identity plotline is oddly relevant when viewing in modern times. Hoewver, Miss Belle is annoying rather than scary and Maharis plays a pretty sleazy character too. The ending's a good one, but it seems to take a long time to get there.
