- Cort Evers arrives in town, falling off his horse. The doctor says he doesn't have long to live as he tries to end his ten year chase to find his brother Mitch to avenge the death of six men during the war.
- On Sunday morning in Laramie a haggard man rides past Troop and falls off his horse. After examining him, the doctor says he has a week or two to live. When asked, Troop guesses the man to be 50 but the doctor says his age is 35. Troop questions the man who says he is not wanted but is looking for someone. At the Birdcage he asks Lily if she has heard of Mitch Evers. Lily tells him no but tells Dan Mitch is working on a local ranch. Troop has learned a similar story. While resting and drinking in the Birdcage, Cort says Mitch is his brother and responsible for the death of six fellow servicemen from their home town who tried to escape as prisoners but were shot. Mitch had given them up and Cort was sick or he would have been dead as well. Troop finds Mitch who decides it is time to confront Cort rather than continue to run. As they meet Mitch removes his gun and tells Cort he must know the truth. It was Cort under the influence of the fever who gave up the men. Cort suddenly realized the truth but it causes his heart to fail as falls into Mitch's arms.—Anonymous
