Ben Wyatt, a marshal for 30 years, brings to Laramie the body of an outlaw he killed. He checks into the hotel in a front room with a view of the street. He is waiting for the two brothers of the dead man to arrive and plans to kill them with his rifle without warning. The men murdered a family at a stage depot. Troop knows Wyatt as a brave lawman and is disappointed to see how Wyatt has changed. He decides he has to do something about it but is unclear what he can do. After he learns the brothers are coming in to town, he confronts Wyatt again. He tosses Wyatt's rifle into the street alerting the brothers and tells Wyatt to go retrieve it. Wyatt confronts the men in the street and is able to take them without firing a shot.
