Where did they plug in the dance lights?!
At the dance in the barn during the final scene, there are clearly electric light bulbs inside the hanging colored lanterns to light up the barn. In that time, there were no electrical outlets yet, especially in barns.

Beautiful Dreamer

This episode starts out with a stow-away on the train Charles and Jonathan are expecting a shipment on. They chase a box with legs, only to discover that It's Toby Noe, an old friend from Winoka. They invite him to come back to Walnut Grove. What starts out as a happy occasion soon turns into an annoying occasion as Mr. Noe is actually pretty demanding and obnoxious. He puts away food like there's no tomorrow, is in love with a woman who does not love him back, and is quickly wearing out his welcome.

There's also a pretty strange sub-plot about Laura and a boy she likes. I thought the boy looked more like a girl and didn't think he was Laura's type at all (of course, I am more for the blondish type farmers who start with the letter 'A'...)

This episode is a light-hearted comic story and one I'm pretty fond of.

When I hear this song, I think of Adam Cartwright playing it on his guitar...

"Dance With Me" guest starring Ray Bolger

Friend of the Ingalls, Toby Noe (Ray Bolger), is invited to stay with them temporarily, but he soon wears out his welcome by eating all their food and not seeking any employment. He also is determined to pursue a town widow.

Meanwhile Laura and her friend Jason seem to want to attend a town dance with each other but are both hesitant to voice the fact to each other.

What a pleasure it was to again see the great Ray Bolger reprise his role of Toby Noe. (See episode entitled "There's No Place Like Home") I always love seeing the film industry greats cross over into television.

Little House On The Prairie was such a wonderful TV show. Great stories, family values, tears, and laughter. It's timeless, just like the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Great episode but not historically accurate
kateeyh3 February 2021
Laura says she is bringing a peanut butter sandwich to school for lunch. Bcuz that is all that is all they have left to eat. Toby Noe has been eating everything. Peanut butter was first introduced to the United States at the St. Louis Worlds Fair in 1904. Laura would have been 37 then.

Why Must I Be An Old Fool in Love?
ExplorerDS678912 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
What seemed like an ordinary freight run would end up reuniting Charles and Jonathan with a dear old friend. When the two prepared to load up the Olesons' liquor shipment, they found the boxcar littered with empty bottles, and one of the crates sprouted legs and took off running. I'm serious. Charles, Jonathan and the angry dispatcher chased it all the way to the roundhouse. They managed to catch the wayward crate and inside of it they found none other than Toby Noe, the jovial old man from Winoka! Charles invites him home for supper, which he immediately regrets, and at church on Sunday, Toby shows off his skill as an organ player. Hester Sue singing and the congregation clapping along made for a swell worship. Only Amanda Cooper had a problem with it as she chastised Reverend Alden for no real reason. Toby on the other hand suddenly became smitten by that angry woman. He tried to formally introduce himself to her and make a good impression, but she blew him off. Determined not to give up, Toby decided to drag Laura along as a go-betweener. That didn't work either. But serenading Amanda in the middle of the night got him an invitation to tea. And so, the conversation was going fine when that damn dog Bandit, who'd come with Laura and Albert as they spied on Toby, chased after Amanda's cat and caused a good deal of breakage. She kicked Toby out, and he decided it was time to leave town, much to Charles' delight as Toby had become quite the moocher. Realizing it was their fault for Toby now leaving, Albert and Laura devised a plan to get him and that old Cooper bat back together: make her jealous. Because, you know, that worked so well before (see The Spring Dance.) So they set him up with Widow Mumford, who could easily pass as his mother. Amanda watches and gets a ton of wrong impressions. Caroline tries to smooth things out with her, she likes Toby deep down, but can't admit to herself, blah, blah, blah.

Meanwhile, a boy at school, Jason, who doesn't have a spine to his name, secretly like Laura, but didn't have the cajones to ask her to the dance. He ended up hurting her feelings. Twice. I have no idea what Laura sees in that little bugger. All in all, Albert's idea was pretty lame, but I do not sympathize with crybaby Laura here. But Albert has another idea and Laura goes along with it because she's a moron. So she starts putting the moves on Ned, who she SHOULD actually be with as he's smarter and more tactful than Jackass Jason. Guess what? It didn't work. No!? So, Toby continues to be a lazy, mooching bum, forcing me to sympathize with Amanda now, thank you very much. At least it was a step in the right direction when Charles got him a job at Hanson's mill. But instead of using the money to pay Charles back for the food he's eaten and that freakin' suit he bought on his credit, Toby bought a broach for Amanda. But at dinner that night when Toby hoped to pop the question, she blew him off in the most hurtful and insulting way she could. I tried to warn you, Toby. Maybe now the old fool will take a hint and forget her? No, we've still got 16 minutes to go. He went and told her off. Well, onto the dance! Despite all the cruel words they exchanged, Amanda still comes and dances with Toby. That little idiot Jason manned up and asked Laura to dance, so now all was well, and you know what? I don't care this time.

What a disappointment Dance With Me was. On the one hand, it was nice seeing Ray Bolger as Toby Noe again, but he's become a drunken, mooching old tramp. He's become the vocal version of Charlie Chaplin...the character he always plays, not the man himself. This episode didn't need to be 90 minutes. It felt padded as hell, it was boring in a few places, and I just didn't care about Laura's subplot. Absolutely NO reason was given why she would like that Jason kid. I also didn't like the mean tone of this one. Amanda was mean, Jason was mean, Laura was mean, Toby was mean to Charles by mooching off of him, and Charles was mean for letting him. Paul Wolff's script was lousy and Michael Landon did very little, if anything, to improve it. Why did they have to stretch this out to 90 minutes? That made it even worse. A weak story with a weak plot that's stretched out to last a certain length is a recipe for disaster. So Dance With Me sucked, but I do recommend checking out Season 5, it has some pretty good episodes. My favorites are As Long as We're Together, There's No Place Like Home, Mortal Mission, Barn Burner and The Wedding. My least favorites were Fagin, The Godsister, The Winoka Warriors and of course, Dance With Me. Well, I'm happy to say I've critiqued all 204 episodes of Little House on the Prairie. Most of them were great, a few of them were bad, but it's all in all a great show and very well made. Just avoid the bad ones and you'll have a great time.

Amazing Grace, the best of this chapter.-
drfernandogil26 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This chapter is really absurd.- Toby Noe's presence is already absurd. That Charles gives him shelter, food (abundant) and even a suit is absurd. But the things that happened between Laura and that Jetson boy are ridiculous... We also see that the Ingalls girls continue with their ephemeral courtships, almost one boyfriend per chapter. - This chapter really has no truth to it, and the mere presence of Toby Noe, drunk, lazy and a big consumer of food, is already annoying in itself. Amanda understandably rejects him.

The only good thing about this chapter is hearing Amazing Grace (one of the best gospel hymns in history) being sung in the church, and country music at the famous dance.

Something strange happens to me with this series Little House on the prairie.- It must be the 10th time that I watch the entire series, and every time I watch it, I find more and more inaccuracies, contradictions and absurd and unreal facts. When I saw it when I was younger it seemed more interesting to me. It seems that over the years, I have sharpened my critical sense and life has shown me how unrealistic so much goodness is.
