- The rampant camp fever has the doctors stumped; HQ believes the fever is carried by rat-borne mites and fleas. Fr. Mulcahy is in Seoul, trying to dig up more info on the fever. The 4077th MASH is getting more and more fever patients by the hr. They are running out of beds. The disease doesn't have a name and antibiotics don't work against it. Potter assigns Frank as the control officer for all the rats on base. Houlihan wants a promotion for Frank, if he manages to get the situation under control.
HQ has also issued a directive regarding a contest, Soldier of the Month, to be judged by second in command (which is Frank Burns in this case). One enlisted man will get to spend 6 days in Tokyo. Candidates will be judged on dress and deportment. And a final oral quiz on historical knowledge. The news spreads like wildfire and suddenly even Klinger is in Uniform and all enlisted men start saluting the officers on base.
But Ferret Face is also Rat Officer; he is a busy boy. Frank totally misses the lack of renal output from the fever victims, disagrees with the idea of restricting fluid intake, as expected. Frank is giving them 2 liters of fluid intakes but the renal output is not enough in comparison. This is indicative of acute renal failure. Father Mulcahy returns from Seoul with news. Japs and Russians had the same kind of fever in Manchuria during the late 30's. The disease, hemorrhagic fever, is more common sense medicine than anything else. He confirms that fever causes kidneys to shut down and a patient can drown in his own fluids. Hawkeye sends 2 patients to the 121st field hospital as they have the kidney machine.
Frank comes down with the fever and is extremely sick (he caught and carried dead rats out of the compound, and the mites and fleas jumped onto him and he caught the fever); he cannot judge the contest. BJ and Hawkeye step in..
Potter keeps the Soldier of the Month quiz in the company safe. Radar knows the combination. Klinger steals a peek at the test for Soldier of the Month by breaking into the safe. During the oral test, Klinger's calisthenics make boot camp look like standing at attention. This is because Klinger had written the answers on various parts of his body. Radar catches him and wins the contest. Potter gives Radar tips to survive Tokyo and its distractions. Radar is returned a few days later by a MP who charges Radar with drunk and disorderly behavior in Tokyo.
Margaret cares for a sick Frank and wants him to make a will. Frank dedicates all his assets to his wife Louise, whom he calls the only person who ever really cared and understood. To Margaret he leaves all his clothes. 6 days later Frank is all better and has his first dump. Margaret walks him outside and gives him a proper punch in the face for willing his clothes to her.
