- Hill 403 is up for grabs and Army actuary, aptly named Colonel Bloodworth (Charles Aidman), annoys Hawkeye with his cold-blooded "pin-point accuracy" and casualty predictions. The push will begin at 0900. The hill is heavily defended by foxholes and barbed wires. Bloodworth estimates a total of 280 - 290 casualties passing through the 4077th in the next 24 hrs, considering the size of the enemy, the artillery, and their own fighting forces backed by tanks and mortar fire. Add another 20 if it rains. Bloodworth says that war is a science and numbers can be predicted with pinpoint accuracy. Hawkeye doesn't like the insensitivity. The Swamp Rats get angry when Boston will not share more than 1/2 a pate cracker from his goody basket from home (which has many delicacies like caviar, pheasant etc, which Winchester refuses to share), but the food backs up on both Boston and Margaret, his dinner companion of choice.
The casualties from the attack on hill 403 start rolling in. Bloodworth had split his attack into 3 waves. The first wave hit the hill first, and the casualties coming into 4077th had "1" marked on their helmets. Houlihan and Winchester both get botulism from the canned pheasant they ate earlier and get sick. Winchester has to leave his patient in the middle of a surgery.
BJ has to finish the surgery fumbled by Boston and BJ gets a pilot's jacket only large enough for Col. Potter as a thank you. Winchester claims that the jacket belongs to him since he is the doctor on record. BJ gives it to Winchester, only for him to realize that only Potter can fit inside it. Klinger meets a kindred Toledo spirit, Pvt. Danker (Jerry Houser), and they talk of the Trianon dance club and their favorite, Packo's Hungarian hot dogs with chili peppers.
Hawkeye is irate and loses his temper with Colonel Bloodworth (Bloodworth has predicted 280 casualties from the assault on hill 403 and Hawkeye was gloating that Bloodworth was off by 77 (as only 203 casualties came in after the first assault), when news comes in on PA of more wounded coming in via ground vehicles); the Col. is equally irate (Hawkeye hates that Bloodworth has reduced human lives to statistics in his ledger book, and he even grabs Bloodworth's collar and calls him a grim reaper) and Hawkeye faces court-martial. Bloodworth leaves the 4077th, even ignoring Potter when he asks him to drop the charges against Hawkeye. But when Col. Bloodworth returns to 4077 wounded, as a patient and not an actuary, both Hawkeye's and his perspectives change. Bloodworth sees kids dying next to him and Hawkeye battling for 48 hrs straight to save them. He decides to drop all charges.
Pvt. Danker sends Klinger a box of Packo's hot dogs and all the trimmings. As he, BJ and Hawkeye roast them in The Swamp fire pit, Boston enters and learns the meaning of grace and hospitality, red, white and blue blood style. They make fun of Winchester, but eventually share the hot dogs with him.
