- The 4077 receives a patient who is a bumbler at the front but regular gourmet in the mess tent. The surgical staff try and convince Potter to keep him but he flatly refuses. He has enough trouble as it is, his marriage is in danger.
- Hawkeye is delighted not to be removing shrapnel or metal from Pvt. Paul Conway (Ed Begley, Jr.) who fell into a foxhole on top of one of his buddies. He is a klutz, always causing accidents on the line. Radar is in Tokyo on R&R and Klinger is scrambling to do Radar's job. The CO is cranky because Klinger cannot locate Mildred anywhere in Missouri. But Klinger did find a chef...who knew Cafe Pierre is French for foxhole? Soon, it is SRO at 4077 Mess and the gang is loving every meal of it at "Chez Klinger". The gang plots to keep Pvt. Conway out of harm's way and within their epicurean reach but Potter orders Pvt. Conway be discharged. Hawkeye visits the CO to check on him; unfortunately, the rest of the gang is trying to reach anyone at the Adjutant General's office who can reassign Conway as an Army cook. Col. Potter interrupts the little pow-wow, blames Hawkeye and ends up blasting his old friend, the AG himself, Gen. Bud Haggerty (John Randolph) before slamming down the phone. Margaret insists on talking to Col. Potter. She explains the female point of view on marriage, where bitter recriminations about separation and love letters both mean the same thing: "I need you." The Colonel is touched. At dinner, Gen. Bud Haggerty pops up at the 4077, genuinely worried about his old pal, Sherman. He handles one problem from the 4077; and Mildred handles another from Pensacola. (She went to visit her cousin, Portia.) Col. Potter's digestion is restored...but the rest of the gang mourn lost cuisine.—LA-Lawyer
- Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is delighted not to be removing shrapnel or metal from Pvt. Paul Conway (Ed Begley, Jr.) who fell into a foxhole on top of one of his buddies. He is a klutz, always causing accidents on the line. The guy he fell on has 2 broken collarbones. Charles (David Ogden Stiers) and BJ (Mike Farrell) are upto their usual verbal skirmishes in OR. Radar (Gary Burghoff) is in Tokyo on R&R and Klinger (Jamie Farr) is scrambling to do Radar's job. The CO Sherman T Potter (Harry Morgan) is cranky because Klinger cannot locate Mildred anywhere in Missouri (For 3 days she has not answered the phone at her house). But Klinger did find a chef... Turns out COnway is an excellent cook. He used to be the cook at the cafe Pierre in New York.
Soon, it is SRO at 4077 Mess and the gang is loving every meal of it at "Chez Klinger" (Klinger has converted the dreaded mess tent into a restaurant and has lines of folks waiting for hrs to get a table). Klinger plans to go into business of his own with Conway after the war. a 4 star restaurant in Toledo. The gang plots to keep Pvt. Conway out of harm's way and within their epicurean reach but Potter orders Pvt. Conway be discharged. Potter is pissed that his marriage with Mildred might be falling apart (she wrote in her last letter that she wants Potter to come home. She called him selfish, thoughtless and inconsiderate) and yet he is expected to do his job.
Hawkeye visits the CO to check on him; unfortunately, the rest of the gang is trying to reach anyone at the Adjutant General's office who can reassign Conway as an Army cook. Col. Potter interrupts the little pow-wow, blames Hawkeye for ignoring his direct orders and ends up blasting his old friend, the AG himself, Gen. Bud Haggerty (John Randolph) before slamming down the phone. Potter says if anyone is transferring out, it will be he himself. Margaret (Loretta Swit) insists on talking to Col. Potter. She explains the female point of view on marriage, where bitter recriminations about separation and love letters both mean the same thing: "I need you." The Colonel is touched.
At dinner, Gen. Bud Haggerty (John Randolph) pops up at the 4077, genuinely worried about his old pal, Sherman. He handles one problem from the 4077 (Haggerty is very impressed with Conway's cooking and agrees to change his MOS to a US army cook and then assigns Conway to his personal staff in Tokyo. But Conway asks that he be assigned as a cook to his old unit, which Potter makes Haggerty agree to); and Mildred handles another from Pensacola, she calls back Sherman in Korea (She went to visit her cousin, Portia. She tells Potter that Portia's neighbors have a young boy who just got back from Korea and was treated at a MASH unit. She says she can imagine Potter as his doctor and knows his work is important and asks forgiveness for her letter the previous week) Col. Potter's digestion is restored...but the rest of the gang mourn lost cuisine.
